Jerky 4k60p mkv playback after Nov. update

After installing the November update on my Vero4k+ I’m seeing stuttering/jerky playback on 4k60p HDR mkv content. It stutters and jerks every few seconds. Gemini Man and Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk are the only 4k60p movies I have and they both do it. No problem with 4k24p HDR or 1080p SDR content.

To get a better understanding of the problem you are experiencing we need more information from you. The best way to get this information is for you to upload logs that demonstrate your problem. You can learn more about how to submit a useful support request here.

Depending on the used skin you have to set the settings-level to standard or higher, in summary:

  • enable debug logging at settings->system->logging

  • reboot the OSMC device twice(!)

  • reproduce the issue

  • upload the log set (all configs and logs!) either using the Log Uploader method within the My OSMC menu in the GUI or the ssh method invoking command grab-logs -A

  • publish the provided URL from the log set upload, here

Thanks for your understanding. We hope that we can help you get up and running again shortly.

Thanks for the quick response. I enabled logging and now I can’t reproduce the problem. Not sure what was going on before but I’ll post a log if it happens again.

Do you have subtitles switched on? It might be smoother without.

FWIW: we recently got Billy Lyn to play without issues when subtitles are on. But this is on a newer kernel.

Yay!

Did some more testing and figured out how to reproduce the jerky playback on 4k60p. It happens when returning to the library view and selecting a 4k60p title like Gemini Man while a movie is playing in the background. I do this quite often to prevent a display resync which is excruciatingly slow on my JVC RS3k projector. Subtitles are off.

Also switched to nfs mounting with fstab thinking that might help but it didn’t make a difference. Iperf3 results were 940Mbps using a wired connection.

This is likely caused by the fact that you have whitelisting enabled.

You should also have Adjust Refresh Rate set to Always and not On Start / Stop.

Just tried disabling whitelist and turned refresh to always and it did not fix the problem.

Please post some new logs demonstrating this

Thanks

Sam

Thanks.

Can you post the MediaInfo for Gemini Man?
You should also check for updates and make sure that your system is fully up to date

Cheers

When I turned on the TV this morning there was a message on the screen about an available update. I installed the update but it didn’t fix the problem.

Try the staging repository, if you can.

To test this update:

  1. Login via the command line
  2. Run the following command to add the staging repository:
    echo 'deb http://apt.osmc.tv buster-devel main' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/osmc-devel.list
  3. Run the following commands to update: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade && reboot
  4. Your system should have have received the update.

Please see if the issue is resolved.

I also recommend you remove /etc/apt/sources.list.d/osmc-devel.list after updating.

I’d also recommend you deactivate the staging repository. You can do so with the following command:
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/osmc-devel.list.

Please note that we will automatically disable this update channel after 14 days on your device in case you forget to do so to ensure that your system reverts to the stable update channel.

I’m hesitant to install it on this Vero because everything else is working so well. But I have another Vero4k+ that still has 18.9 on it. Can I use the same commands to install the staging repo version on it?

That will update you from v18.9 to v19.3, which may cause issues for you. The v18.9 shouldn’t have an issue that needs fixing – my understanding was that the problem was introduced recently for you.
