Well, I’m glad to say that the 2x Pi 3 and 1x Pi 2 have updated to 18.3-RC1 (build date 2019-05-19), and the two problems I reported have gone.
The Pi 1 is mucking about just now and taking its time (should really be upgraded), but the more modern devices appear to be fine.
And just for completeness, the Pi 1 shows the new skin on boot, and the text is missing there. When I’ve logged it into a profile (got the right one) it reverts to Confluence and appears to work fine.
Maybe time to chuck the Pi 1 for a newer model, as it’s a bit creaky if we’re honest!
