Hi,
I tried install the latest OSMC release 2023.12-1 on a SD card. Once the OS is loaded on the SD cards and SD card inserted into the raspberry pi 4, I see the initial screen saying “formating the device” and the second one saying “Installation” and both steps complets correclty. The raspberry reboot, I see the start screen with OSMC logo and then nothing.
I don’t see the usual configuration screens where we can select the language and so on.
To install the OSMC image, I ried several ways :
- Using OSMC installer
- Downloading the image directly from the osmc website and use OSMC installer
- Use several random image installer and using the image gathered directly on OSMC website
My raspberry is ok because when I insert another SD Card with an old version of osmc installed in it, it works.
It is not the SD card neither because when I install on it an old image of OSMC, it works too.
Of course, I’ve selected the latest OSMC version compatible with raspberry pi 4…
Is there any specific procedure to install the latest OSMC release ?
Thank you in advance for your support.
It boots here – what display are you connected to?
To a standard TV. Connected through HDMI. I really don’t understand why this fresh installation doesn’t work while the previous ones boots perfectly.
SD cards has been verified, RB pi4 is ok, power supply and HDMI are ok : they all work in alternative configuration. It seems to be the installation on the SD card that goes wrong somehow.
How do you do it on your side ?
On my side, I format my SD card (32Gb, fat32), then I use OSMC installer, select the latest version, and I leave OSMC installer do the rest. Once its done, I insert the SD card in the pi, I power it up and wait for the region selection screen to appear. But it doesn’t so far
No need to format the SD card.
If you see the OSMC logo but then the screen goes black Kodi may be switching to a mode not supported by your TV. Logs should show this.
Ok, I’ll try to look into the log. Do you know how I can access to them when I start a session on putty ?
Many thanks in advance for your answer.
Ok sorry. Here they are :

Sorry – I need full logs.
I think it is an issue similar to the one [here] which you can see that @grahamh developed a fix for. I’m not sure if that had made it to the stable release or not. You could try enabling staging like is outlined near the bottom of that thread and then sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
to apply any updates that havn’t made it to general release yet.
That fix was in the Vero kernel. Nothing to do with RPi.

Based on these log, you see that it is a problem related to HDMI ? Can you please tell me what trigger this ?
Kodi isn’t picking up on the capabilities of your display (or AVR?) so it’s switching to a default display mode that I think your display doesn’t support. If it is plugged into an AVR you could try plugging it into the display and see how you get on with that.
Well done @darwindesign
So for the troubleshooting, it was indeed because of my AVR. I connected the RB pi4 direclty to my TV and I had been able to access OSMC home screen. Then, I changed the refresh rate of the screen from 60Hz to 50Hz in System/Display menu. I’ve reconnecte the pi to the AVR and it was ok.
The only thing I don’t understand is why, with this new OSMC release, I had to do this while with the previous ones, I never had this issue.
Thank you anyway for your support.

I don’t think anything’s changed in the release. With RPi it’s recommended to have the TV and AVR switched on before you boot up to get a good EDID read.
Nothing changed regarding this in the last release. Maybe your AVR got a firmware update that’s introduced some quirks.
AVR is not connected to internet and haven’t received any update since a long time. And with previous old images of OSMC I keep just in case, and on the same configuration (TV + AVR + RB PI4), it works fine.
I just tried to reboot the pi (connected to the AVR) with the setting mentionned above and I don’t see anything on the screen. TV and AVR were switched on before the reboot of the pi.
No that I have a workaround by connecting the pi to the TV, I will try different setting in menus. I will also try to load one of the previous image I keep to compare the settings. I’ll keep you informed
Here are the log of the “old” image of OSMC :
https://paste.osmc.tv/ezeyonabol
Does it help to understand the difference between this and the previous one ? Because with this one, the configuration AVR+TV+RB Pi4 start and works fine (OSMC release used is 2021.08-1)
The only difference I see is in Audio menu :
Old version (2021.08-1, starting well on the AVR + TV) :
New version (2023.12-1, starting well on the TV only) :
Just to be precise enough, to get the latest screenshot, the Pi has been started on the TV and then plugged, powered on, to the AVR. If I restart the RB pi like this, while it is connected to the AVR, the display becomes inactive again.
I’ve got the same problem with Raspberry Pi OS in its latest version…
I’ve tried several input of my AVR. Nothing works. I have the multicolor square screen at the start and then nothing. Same behavior as OSMC.
You might try unplugging the AVR from the wall for a minute and then plugging it back in and see if that changes anything. You could also check the manual or search the internet for the model of your avr and the phrase “soft reset”. If that doesn’t make a difference I can only think to suggest to search out instructions for making and loading an edid for raspberry pi’s. Basically when you boot up you pi it asks what it is connected to what display modes it supports. The OS and then Kodi uses that information to choose how it outputs video. Since this information isn’t getting though correctly when plugged into the AVR it is possible to connect the RPi to the TV, make a edid from what your TV is sending out, and then set the RPi in config.txt to use that saved information instead of looking for it via HDMI.
