Might Be Switching Back to the Raspberry Pi 2

I received my Vero back in April. I installed everything and hooked it up and the interface seemed to be more responsive compared to my Raspberry Pi 2. The problem I had with the Vero at the time was that it just kept crashing (sad face), so I shelved it and went back to the Pi.

Recently, I was rewiring my home network and I was a little upset that the Raspberry Pi is only running 10/100 Mbps (though not having done any testing, I can’t say that the ethernet adapter is a bottleneck). So I decided to give the Vero another shot, remembering that it was a little snappier and that it has a Gigabit adapter.

I migrated Kodi over to the Vero and everything was great for a while. But now the Vero is becoming a pain to use. My setup is a Vero installed on a mini SD card with two 3TB external HDs attached via USB. The Vero is connected to the network via the ethernet adapter. There is no keyboard or mouse attached and I am not using the provided remote. My TV remote (Sony) is able to command the Vero. I have an Onkyo receiver between the Vero and the TV.

Below is a list of issues I’m having with the Vero.

  • Sometimes when I turn on my TV the Vero no longer responds to the TV remote. I know that the Vero is not ‘frozen’ because the time still increments. I power cycle to resolve this issue.
  • Sometimes when I turn on my TV the screen is just ‘garbled’/distorted. I power cycle to resolve this issue.
  • When browsing through my movie list, the Vero after a while just cannot keep up with the fanart/images and just quits changing the the artwork or doesn’t display any artwork at all. Sometimes it catches up but most times the Vero just becomes unresponsive.
  • While playing HD files, the Vero starts stuttering and starts buffering the video.
  • I still get crashes with the device (sad faces)
  • Sometimes when I do a soft reboot (via the network with a reboot command), the Vero can’t find one of the external hard drives and goes into safe mode. I power cycle to resolve this issue.

I did not have any of these problems while running Kodi on the Raspberry Pi 2. The menus are faster on Vero (especially loading my huge music library) and file transfers over the network are faster. These seem to be the only two advantages for me of the Vero over the Pi. And even the faster menus advantage is negated by the fact that the Vero eventually gives up on the menu when it can’t keep up with the artwork.

Should I switch back to the Pi or does anyone have any suggestions to make the Vero work better? Maybe I just have something configured incorrectly.

Hi

I am sorry to hear you’re having problems. I see you are a new member here. There are a lot of happy Vero users.

  • Are you on the latest version of OSMC? The latest version is 2015.09-2. This will ensure you get the best Vero experience.

Can you provide a log for the following scenarios. This should help us identify any issues and resolve them in a timely manner:

Does your router / switch implement flow control?

What is safe mode? I’m not aware of a safe mode on OSMC.

I suspect you may be on a very old version of OSMC if you received your device in April. Upgrading via My OSMC → Updater should bring you up to speed and resolve a lot of issues.

Sam

Here is what is in my kodi.log. Let me know if there is any other log you need. Is there a better way to post the logs?

I just upgraded OSMC/Kodi today. I was running whatever the previous version was. I try to keep it up to date.

There has been an update every month since April, so it is hard to say.

It seems that you are not on the latest version. Can you SSH in to your device and run these commands:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade && sudo reboot

Then, if the issues persist:

  1. Enable ‘Debug’ logging in Settings
  2. Perform the minimum # of steps required to recreate a problem you are experiencing
  3. Upload a full set of logs via My OSMC → Log Uploader. This should let us see what the issue is.
  4. Give a description of the problem and the URL here.

Unfortunately I don’t know enough about your system to see what the issue may be nor the problem you may be experiencing. How are you trying to play content (from a share, a drive, or the network)? When do you experience issues? Is it only with certain content etc

Sam

I ran the commands you suggested. The update command looks like it went out and got some stuff; the upgrade command says it installed libflac8 vero-image-4.1.5-2-osmc vero-image-4.1.5-6-osmc. Am I supposed to use these commands to perform the updates and not the one through the OSMC/Kodi interface?

The reboot command obviously killed my SSH connection but the TV screen was frozen and I had to power cycle.

I run it with these changes for a few days and report back.

I mostly watch files that are stored on an external hard drive.

This was just a one off. In future you can upgrade via My OSMC

That’s OK. I think that issue was fixed in the new kernel, which you just installed, but wouldn’t be running until the next reboot (kind of ironic)

I will keep an eye on this thread. Keep me updated

Sam

Sadly, I’m still having problems with a bunch of new ones now.

First, I misspoke when I said safe mode. The Vero will occasionally go into emergency mode upon a reboot.

My screen is all messed up now. It isn’t showing any of the graphics. The log says that it failed to load a bunch of texture files. It also says a bunch of fonts were not loaded. It looks like maybe my skin got corrupted somehow (Transparency).

The biggest issue though is still a problem with random reboots and sad faces. It seems to be having a problem with the hard drive. It constantly says it cannot find items in the library even though the hard drives are on and connected and seen by Kodi. So I either power cycle Vero or power cycle one or both of the hard drives.

I try to go into OSMC settings to upload the log files but I can’t get in there and it says to check the log file. I don’t see anything in the log file pertaining to the OSMC add on.

You are very patient. For me two weeks was more than enough to switch back to RPi and let Vero to collect dust since there is no any other useful usage for it.

@Stas, I’d like to get it working as like you said, I have no other use for it and I spent a bit of money on it.

I was able to resolve the graphics/texture issue by uninstalling and reinstalling the skin. I am still having the other problems though.

When you see issues like sad faces or missing icons, it can be good to reload the software. You can do that from Download - OSMC. Then, if issues persist, we get some logs and take it from there.

As requested previously, we need logs to get a better understanding of the problem. Please see How to submit a useful support request - General - OSMC

Sam

Just an update on this post. I did switch back to my Raspberry Pi 2. But after about a month that was experiencing the same type of problems. It turns out that one of my external hard drives was failing.

So I dusted off the Vero and gave it another shot. I also relocated my two external HDs from the Vero and attached them to my router. These are my media HDs. I added a third external HD as a backup HD and now I have a decent NAS on my network. I pointed the Kodi on Vero to use the NAS now instead of having attached HDs.

Vero is now a humming, happy, little media center and I am very happy with its performance. The menus load, transition, and scroll much faster than on the Raspberry Pi 2.

Good to hear! FYI, I’ve had a couple update woes that have been solved via a fresh install. If you use Backup Add-on to create an image to your NAS from the Vero it can be used to restore all settings/customizations done on the vero to a fresh vero/pi2/pi b+ install

Edit ->. Wtf, forum showed last response as 22 min ago, I respond and now it shows 22 days. Sorry for the dig!
