Hi folks, could I possibly have a bit more information about the Vero 4K / 4K+ now being “End of Life” since 31/01/25? I had no idea that was coming; there has been no mention of it in any blog post and in fact I wouldn’t have known anything about it other than the banner at the top of the homepage. The last I heard, there were plans to upgrade the Vero 4K to 64 bit userland and Debian Bookworm. Has all that been shelved now?
Also, what does that mean for Kodi Omega? A previous blog post said all devices that were on Nexus would receive Omega, but I took that to mean we’d get the full suite of point releases, too. Does this End of Life thing mean the Vero 4K won’t go beyond Kodi 21.1? And also why no blog post announcing all this? That’s very unusual. Thanks.
There will be a blog post about this shortly. I just need to publish it.
Kodi Omega has been made available for Vero 4K/4K+, but there are no further updates.
Sam
Hi Sam, thanks for publishing the blog post. You’ve gone beyond the 5 years of updates and obviously don’t us anything more. However I do find this sudden termination a bit strange and abrupt though, like it was just decided one day on a whim. When you abandoned support for the Pi 1 and other models, you at least got them up to the final point releases of Kodi 18 (here). Is there no way you would consider applying just Kodi’s own patches for the lifetime of Omega? No new features, just Kodi’s own bugfixes. It doesn’t have to be every single point release but maybe a couple throughout the year. To end on 21.1 is going to leave a lot of bugs unpatched.
Also, what does end of life mean in terms of the APT package manager and the My OSMC “store” downloadable add-ons for Vero 4K? How long have we got before those servers turn off? Thanks.
It was not decided on a whim and I have been telling users for several months that as of 2025 we will end support.
The changes in 21.2 are minor. I can consider a release of this but this would be the last version for sure.
No servers are being turned off. Please read the announcement. There is only one update and download server and it stays online.
I always read your blog posts; I’ve never seen you say that support will be ending in 2025 for the Vero 4K. Perhaps you have said it somewhere on this forum, but I’ve not seen it on the blog. In fact reading the blogs, you never made it clear either that the upgrade to a 64 bit userland and / or Debian Bookworm would be restricted to Vero V only.
That’s absolutely fine if you want to do that, but that wasn’t at all clear in your blog posts.
But look that’s fine; you’ve been supporting this device a long time so I thank you for that. If we could get a further point release for Omega to iron out the last of the top priority bugs that would be awesome.
I have made it clear on the forums that it wouldn’t be supported after 2025.
Initially not even Kodi v21 was planned but I left things as long as possible.
Which bugs in Kodi v21.1 that are resolved in 21.2 are you particularly suffering from? I ask because we haven’t rolled out v21.2 to any device just yet but there does not seem to be a lot of reported issues and it may be easier to backport them.
Thing is not everyone delves deep into the forum, because unless they have a problem, why would they right? But the blogs are the main forum of communication most people would see and would be subscribed to. I’ve gone right through several years worth of posts and there’s literally nothing there about this.
I haven’t got any particular problems with 21.1 at the moment, I just like things to be as updated as possible and maximize the potential of my little Vero, lol.
Hence why we have a blog post about this. We will also display a message on device shortly informing them of the situation.
Well I certainly was not talking about it several years ago but have been recently on the forums.
If there are any ‘top priority’ bugs that you want fixed from Kodi I can look at them.
Other than that I think the Vero 4K/4K+ has had a good send off.
This is a page from the OSMC store Vero V page. The Vero 4/4k+ page also always had nearly identical statements, very clearly.
