Hi all,
I’m thinking of getting a Vero V, looking at all my options. I think my external hard drive might draw too much power for a Vero V, even though it’s fine in a TV or anything else I’ve tried, so what is the best way of powering a external hard drive? Is it possible to use a higher power supply, or is my best option to buy a powered hub? I’ll only need this one drive, and I just don’t really know the best way of having one, without too many wires adding to it.
Thanks.
Why not try it first, it may just work as it is. Failing that a powered hub is the way to go.
Mibi in osmc shop there’s this product
4 Port USB 3.0 Powered Hub might help you out somewhat
The USB 2 port on the Vero V supports 500mA and the USB 3 port supports 900mA. This is standard spec for USB devices. If your external drive is designed to run from a single cable then it should fall below one of these specs. Also the Vero’s ship with a 2000mA PSU and the device itself draws less than 500mA. As such, the supplied PSU should already have plenty of headroom to support a single external drive.
The drive should have some power specs with it. 0.9A will probably suffice. If you had multiple drives then a hub would be a must or an external power supply but if not, it is likely to be a non issue
i’ve had issues with my WD MY Passport which theoretically just needs 0.9A.
Tried multiple file systems on it, same issues - the drive would sometimes block - I don’t know if it happened when it was going into standby mode and trying to restart again…whatever.
I since bought a powered HDD and never had any issues. So I would advise you to do the same.
