New Install to ATV1 No Remote & Installer issues

I did a clean install today to internal 8GB hard disk (I have tested with 2 different SSDs)

Running current OSMC-Installer on Lubuntu 14.04

First I ran
sudo apt-get update

then
sudo apt-get install osmc-installer

With the SSD connected to a USB adapter the computer detects the disk but it never shows in the osmc installer , neither on USB or HDD

So I used the .img file method and dd (downloaded a feb 2016 img that was newest available)

I had no apple Remote other than I can pair, unpair and force reboot.

I ran the update now option on atv and still the remote is unchanged.

Swapped SSD to a completely different unit , different brand, and have the same result

I checked the remote settings on both images and the RC6 is disabled as I believe it should be , and still no apple remote

Any help appreciated

AFAIK this is not how you install it to the disk. You would install onto a USB Stick choosing HDD as target and then boot that USB stick on the ATV with the HDD connected in the ATV.

So even for a hard disk install, I install to a USB memory frrom the osmc installer?

I looked on the wiki , did not find anything about installation on ATV1
