NFS SMB Shares both buffering on OSMC

Setup
Pi2 with USB as Server
Pi2 as client
Firestick as client

Issue
Trying to ensure I can access my content from all TVs in the house I have the above setup over WiFi. Cable is impossible due to the length of the lays, but the wifi signal is strong, throughput is good, the server is close to my AP and I am streaming netflix etc no problem.

I have shared my content with SMB, doing this I would get about 8 mins into a show and it would start buffering. I read online the best fix would be to share via NFS. Having set this up tonight I finally pressed play and I got about 2 seconds in before files would just hard freeze (no buffer at all).

I am using a pretty vanilla build and havent really changed anything other than mapping those shares.

Any ideas?

On the pi2 client, you could consider fstab mounted shares.

For both clients you could take a look at:

thanks @Tom_Doyle. I am actually struggling with the fstab share mounting.

I cant find decent guide for what I need to do on the server and I keep getting issues ‘finding’ the files, so I guess they are not shared correctly.

Thats what I am using in my fstab, but when I browse the local location I get

-bash: cd: cifsTV: No such device

Hi,

Please try:

sudo mkdir /mnt/cifsTV

Update your fstab entry to:

//192.168.1.XXX/media/randomstring/complete/TV /mnt/cifsTV cifs uid=1000,sec=ntlmv2,username=xxxx,password=xxxx,noauto,x-systemd.automount 0 0

Then when you browse its root filesystem, mnt and cifsTV should be there.

Thanks Tom, will give it a try. The advanced settings seems to have made quite a difference. Have only tested for about 15mins but I didn’t have any issues over NFS.

Still keen to get fstab setup for my own understanding. I did have an error in dmesg originally about a code 111 which was related to file path being too long so have now symlinked on the server a shorter path.

The one thing that is now really strange is that my TV shows that are shared via NFS are playing no problem. The films share is showing with no issues and played last night, now they are no longer showing in my library, nor in my yatse app…butcan be browsed to under files… Haven’t had much luck playing them but all folders are able to be read.

Final one… How do I deal with advanced settings on the fire stick if I cannot ssh onto it (unrooted)

Hi,

This is a limitation of cifs, you maybe better with nfs for the fstab mount. Search the forum, there are plenty topics related fstab.

This is because the source has changed. You may need to clean the library and rescan.
