Old Raspberry Pi and D-Link DWA-160A2 wireless adapter

I have an old Raspberry Pi (I believe it’s a B — 256MB RAM, 2 USB ports) that was running Raspbmc without any problems. I am using a D-Link DWA-160A2 wireless adapter (connected to a powered USB hub). I originally got that adapter because I needed 5GHz capability and there weren’t a ton of options at the time (2013). After updating to OSMC/Kodi, the wireless adapter is not visible, and I the wireless network option is missing. I plugged the adapter into my iMac to make sure that it is working, and it is.

For some reason, I can’t seem to find a list of OSMC-supported/compatible wireless adapters. Does anyone know if/where such a list exists, or if not, why?

Incidentally, I believe that the DWA-160A2 uses Atheros.

If nobody has any ideas, I’m just going to buy a new wireless adapter. I don’t have the 5GHz limitation anymore, so it will be a lot cheaper/easier.

Edit: it’s the 512MB version, though OSMC seems to think that it has 383MB total.

OSMC only shows 383MB because the 512MB of memory is split between the GPU and the CPU.

Post the output of dmesg after booting with the stick inserted that is the basic step to review why the driver is not picked up.

Thanks. I figured something was using the rest of the RAM.

Here’s the dmesg output. I have to split because of length:

Are you sure that the stick is original and is getting enough power? The dmesg messages are a bit strange.
And somehow the stick wants the firmware carl9170-1.fw which seems not included in OSMC but the original ar9170.fw which is included in osmc
Some infos here: en:users:drivers:carl9170.fw [Linux Wireless]

Thank you, fzinken. Now that you mention it, I do recall that I had to jump through some hoops to get this adapter to work with the Pi. I must have flashed the rom with that customized firmware. So now, the question is whether I can find the original firmware somewhere and return it to stock. I imagine that another option would be to edit the kernel so that it makes use of the custom firmware.

As for power, I believe that it’s getting enough through the USB hub. It did in the past. If not, I’ll get a different wireless adapter.

Still trying to figure this out. I could not find a way to restore the adapter firmware to factory (or change it at all — I have no idea how I did it in the first place), so I tried installing the carl9170 driver on the pi. I was able to do this, but it still doesn’t work. I tried to use rfkill to find out what was going on, but any use of rfkill results in a segmentation fault. Here’s a clip of the dmesg:

Could it be the difference between the version of the driver and the version of the firmware? Should I give up on this adapter?

Edit: I should add that I’m temporarily connecting using ethernet over AC.

Okay, it’s working now. Don’t know what I did.
