Options for Plex Player on OSMC?

Are there any Plex players, besides the neglected “Plex for Kodi” plugin that would allow me to have a Plex client on OSMC? Interested in the “Live TV & DVR” feature but this does not seem to be supported on “Plex for Kodi”.

Not keen on “PlexKodoConnect” as I like the Plex UI for the player…Thans!

I’ve been on this train for a while. Sadly with the official Plex for Kodi addon being abandoned by Plex and the other other option really being PlexKodiConnect, you’ve not got a way around using Kodi itself.

I’ve sort of shelved my Vero 4K+ in favour of a Shield Pro for most of this year because of this.

Many will just tell you to switch to PlexKodiConnect or Kodi itself, but if you want to use the Plex client and all the updates since that ancient addon, you’re going to have to look elsewhere.

At least that’s been my unfortunate conclusion. The Vero 4k+ is a really good device and the folks at OSMC have no control over that one plugin.

composite is an active plugin for kodi that allows plex playback havent tried it myself.

Thanks both…

@TechZ - I am coming to the exact same conclusion. I love the VERO 4k+. But (personally) not a fan of KODI, just not for me. I do not mind tinkering and customizing systems. I do a ton of it on my unRAID server and enjoy it. But I am not keen on doing this for the front end / player / app side of things.

My family and I like the Plex front end and now that I got around to getting “Live TV and DVR” to work in Plex, I have no need for anything else. My use case is very simple.

So I think I am going to do like what you have done, move on to another platform for my front end. I really only have two requirements:

  1. Love and support from Plex on the Plex player / client for the platform

  2. Ethernet support

The Shield ticks the above but I am not a gamer and currently do not have a 4k TV (may upgrade in the next year). I do not have 4k content.

The Roku Ultra has Ethernet and Plex seems to offer strong support here. I am in the UK (dual UK / US citizen) and my wife is currently in the USA so may ask her to bring one back.

The Amazon products are nice and have ethernet but I am not keen on the Amazon ecosystem. Same with the Google Chromecast dongle (with ethernet). Apple is a non-starter.

I think I am going to go with the Roku but the new “plain” shield is also attractive but costs more.

That is the main advice I get even when I say it is not something I want to do. I do not want the Kodi front end. I get why some folks like it. But it is not for me and my fmily.

Yep, I have had lots of feedback around “You should use Kodi”, despite me not wanting to

A few potential devices:

  • Roku
  • Chromecast (the new Sabrina device runs Android TV)
  • Xiaomi Mi TV Stick (2020 model)
  • Shield / Shield Pro
  • Apple TV - I wouldn’t discount this as its a very capable player.

Since I do want 4K capability, I leaned towards those that can do wired Ethernet and are powerful enough for high bitrate playback.

The Amazon Fire TV sticks & Chromecast devices can do wired Ethernet with a $10 dongle add-on, apart from those that can do it out of the box like the Chromecast Ultra.

Then why bother with another external player at all when you can just make sure the TV you purchase supports Plex and has ethernet. This can be found on even low end TV’s nowadays.

I use a LG C9 and it has all the apps, but I don’t want it connected to the internet, I personally rather use an external player. Most on-board apps on low-end TVs are terrible slow and rarely updated.

The Plex app on the C9 is excellent, and is updated regularly.

I have a cheap bottom of the range LG and the Plex app is not slow at all and gets updated the same time it does on the more expensive sets running the same OS. I’m also unclear on what the issue would be with connecting the TV to the internet.

@TexasDave I recently unpacked my Vero 4K+ and installed it for use on a secondary TV as the Plex for Chromecast app was just not a nice solution with that TV. I was pleasantly surprised to see the Plex for Kodi app update to v0.2.1 !
