OSMC displays boxes with no text on Apple TV 1st Gen

Personally I’d do an HDD install. It deletes the original Apple TV OS, and anything else on the internal drive, but an HDD install of OSMC on the ATV, is much faster.

If you have content on the internal drive I’d make a backup.

Currently there is a CrystalHD bug in the latest version (Krypton v17).
If you want to try and HDD install I’d use “2017.01-1-HDD” which is the last Jarvis v16 version.

Hi Spinner

Thanks for the advice. I had already purchased a faster USB by the time I saw this and it is better but I will see what version I have installed and, if necessary, roll back to Jarvis. What advantages will a Hard Disk install bring?

Will the updates that seem to happen automatically need to be prevented or are they sub-updates to whatever core installation you have installed?

In reply to Sam - I did not re-seat the card, its just that when OSMC is installed and set up if I then re-route HDMI through the Onkyo, it seems to work fine except occasionally I get a grey screen with a few vague artifacts but if I re-power up the aTV it works again?

Off to research VPN now too!

Thanks for the help.

internal HDD storage has MUCH faster transfer rate, so everything runs quicker.
External storage is limited by the USB 2 port which is 280 Mbit/s or 35 MB/s

The only reason why I’d consider staying with a USB install is that it retains the original Apple TV OS.
IMO the Apple TV OS is pointless when OSMC and other alternatives exist.

If you want to stay on Jarvis, you simply need to go into MyOSMC settings and set it so it does not automatically update.
