I did did download the image from osmc image link rpi2
buring the image to the sd card (ubuntu ) gnome-disk.
I am ending up with 2 partitions on an 8 gb card but filesytem is empty.
what am I missing?

The filesystem is in filesystem.tar.xz. Is that missing?
Did you boot the system and let the installer create the partitions?

just to untar to partoition?
Just boot the system normally and it will partition everything for you.
Can you mount the SD card and ls the contents?

on rpi only red and geenish led static on, no blinking
Are you sure you aren’t using a Rpi B as opposed to a B 2/3?
How are you powering the device?

But had osmc running on it already.
same powerdevice.
Do I need to use a differrent image?
normal debian stretch running with samehardware config
