OSMC Installing Headaches

Hi all.

I’ve been trying unsuccessfully for about the last two days to get OSMC installed to the hard drive of my 160GB AppleTV.
I managed to get a USB version running, but as i plan to use a USB DAC with my unit, running off a USB isn’t optimal.
I’ve tried to install from Stock firmware, from a running version of OpenELEC, all without luck.

I’ve tried
-different USB’s
-different OSMC images.

They all boot up, tell me to remove the USB and power cycle the unit. I do this, and am presented with these instructions a second time. Upon the 3rd reboot i get an apple tv icon with a flashing “?” atop it, like so : Question Mark Screen .
From here i have to either re-install the stock os or a copy of OpenELEC to get the thing booting again

I looked into the whole “read only boot partition” thing, and have tried running through the install using the apple remote to force a reset, in the hope this didn’t trigger the read only status (like pulling the power does) to no effect.

Have i missed something?
Is it worth trying to ssh into OpenELEC to restore write status to the boot partition, and rebooting with the installer USB in ( i haven’t tried this yet)?
Or is it possible my hard drive is rooted ?

Thanks

During the power cycle did you wait at least 10 seconds before plugging the unit back in?

Yep, I thought that might be an issue, such to a point where I ended up with a stopwatch for most of my resets to try and eliminate that as a variable

Is it an official 160GB?
Do you at least get the official OSMC installer running and then saying remove the stick and reboot?

I’m assuming it’s an official one, the rubber base is still firmly attached, which is a decent indicator that it’s running original hardware.
I get the penguin sitting atop the Apple TV logo, then some typical looking Linux boot stuff ie fast moving white text, which then pauses and tells me to remove the USB and reboot.
I’m out of the house ATM, but I’ll try and grab a photo of it later.
I don’t get any of the nice osmc blue install screen like I did with the USB version if that’s what you mean by the official osmc installer

This may be obvious, BUT are you connected to your ethernet hardwire when installing?
