Picture washed out when HDR content is played

Hey there,
I’ve got my vero4k+ since already one year and I get a washed out picture with HDR content.
The blacks are more greyish, and the colors are way less satured than normally.

The TV I use is an Hisense 55U8QF, the spec sheet is here but the TV should work with the following formats : Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, HLG.

And I know I can play HDR10+ movies when going though the integrated prime video software included in the TV, and the picture is really great compared to when I use the vero to play stuff.

I have my vero on the last stable sofware, I’ve already reinstalled OSMC twice, didn’t change anything, and I’ve already triied a bunch of stuff I’ve found ont the forum, nothings changes.

Could I get some help ?

Thank you in advance, if you need any more information, ask it. Thanks !

To get a better understanding of the problem you are experiencing we need more information from you. The best way to get this information is for you to upload logs that demonstrate your problem. You can learn more about how to submit a useful support request here.

Depending on the used skin you have to set the settings-level to standard or higher, in summary:

  • enable debug logging at settings->system->logging

  • reboot the OSMC device twice(!)

  • reproduce the issue

  • upload the log set (all configs and logs!) either using the Log Uploader method within the My OSMC menu in the GUI or the ssh method invoking command grab-logs -A

  • publish the provided URL from the log set upload, here

Thanks for your understanding. We hope that we can help you get up and running again shortly.

Hey,

Since I’ve stuck at home for some days, took the time to install osmc fresh and start some test files.

And here’s my problem.
The first picture is using HDR10+, works fine and detected as such by my TV.
The second picture was HDR10 and detecte by the TV, but you can see the difference in colors with the first one.
The setting on the TV is by default, so I should expect to get the whites white.
Edit : Actually the blacks are also really grey when the tv is in HDR10 mode, compared to HDR10+ or standard where the blacks are totally black.

That second clip has some weird mastering display data

Jan 07 14:18:11 osmc kernel: hdmitx: video: Master display colours:
                             Primary one 0.10000,0.10000, two 0.10000,0.10000, three 0.10000,0.10000
                             White 0.3127,0.3290, Luminance max/min: 1000,0.0000
Jan 07 14:18:11 osmc kernel: hdmitx: video: Max content luminance: 0, Max frame average luminance: 0

If the primaries were zero, the TV would ignore them but I couldn’t say what it would make of 0.1.

I’ll grab that clip and have a closer look.

Can I force it to use 0’s instead of 0.1 ?

You would have to re-mux the clip. Is this the only HDR10 clip with that problem?

It plays fine on my Panasonic BTW. I tried to take a photo but my phone can’t handle the dynamic range.

Well did some more testing.
All HDR10 content playing trough kodi gives me this effect.

I just did some testing with the Netflix logo at the start of any show.
The same file playing trough Plex directly on the TV, gives me really dark blacks around the N, like it is on a non hdr file. But this same file when played trough kodi, the all the black around the N is more dark grey.
Like kodi is forcing the TV to turn on the backlightning, where it should be off.

Can you post mediainfo for these Netflix vids, please?

And debug logs while playing one.

Here’s the video info of the first HDR10 clip I was testing

Here 's the logs while playing the Netflix intro.

You need to set colour range to limited.

Well, I think I was a mixed problem between TV setup and kodi options, but this was the last one and now it’s quite ok, I get the same result on both the plex media and kodi.
That should be it.
Thanks for the help
