Playback problems with some 4k files

In the last couple of months I started having problems playing back certain 4k files, Most work just fine, but some just freeze video, stutter audio or show no video at all and just stuttering audio.

Upgraded to latest release, but no change.

Below is video metadata for one of the problematic files.

To get a better understanding of the problem you are experiencing we need more information from you. The best way to get this information is for you to upload logs that demonstrate your problem. You can learn more about how to submit a useful support request here.

Depending on the used skin you have to set the settings-level to standard or higher, in summary:

  • enable debug logging at settings->system->logging

  • reboot the OSMC device twice(!)

  • reproduce the issue

  • upload the log set (all configs and logs!) either using the Log Uploader method within the My OSMC menu in the GUI or the ssh method invoking command grab-logs -A

  • publish the provided URL from the log set upload, here

Thanks for your understanding. We hope that we can help you get up and running again shortly.

The log suggests there could be a potential cable/connection issue to your Denon AVR. Try a different HDMI Premium High Speed cable and/or other port of the AVR.

Interesting! I tried a different cable between the Vero and the Denon and playback is better, but still loses the picture from time to time. The long cable between Denon and the projector is not so easily replaced, though.

I was wondering why all other 4K content plays fine, and noticed that it switches to 2160P50 mode for the 25fps video file. Any idea why? Or how to make it play back in 2160P25? It is apparently a HDMI cable bandwidth problem that only happens with 4K 25fps videos that are rendered in 2160P50.

You can use whitelisting to change this; but ideally I’d resolve the issue at the cable level.

Yeah… I ordered a new long HDMI cable. But what I still don’t understand is why 2160p 25 fps renders as 2160p50, whereas 24 and 30 fps content renders as 2160p24/2160p30 and not 60.

After trying two new different premium 4K@60 rated long cables the problem still remains. So I started looking around in the settings and noticed that “Force 4:2:2 sampling” was enabled (I vaguely remember needing to turn it on early in the days with the Vero4K for 4K HDR content). So the 2160p50 stream was also output with 422 which apparently either my AVR or projector don’t agree with. So I turned it off. 2160p24 is output in 444 now which works fine, whereas the 2160p50 content is output in 420 which also works fine. So problem solved for now, can return the expensive new cables and stick with my old one
