Plexamp headless on vero4k

I’d like to re-purpose my vero4k as a plexamp headless server.

I installed plexamp headless, and was able to get it running, but it isn’t able to output to any of the audio devices, just tells me “Could not start audio playback”. It also doesn’t show up as a remote play device in any of my clients (although it can see my other clients).

I thought maybe one way to solve this would be to get updated to bookworm, where I can use pulseaudio and pipewire, and newer interfaces for everything. However, I dont know that anyone has done this, so it might be a bit of an adventure.

Another option is to attempt to install raspbian on the vero4k.

Has anyone managed to get this to work? I don’t want to recycle this device, if I can re-use it.

You could install PulseAudio under the current OS, but it’s not something we can support directly

Yeah, I’d probably do a complete re-install of debian bookworm, and go from there. I understand that that this would mean I could not get any support at that point.

However, I’m wondering if there is something that you know about the hardware audio that might make this difficult!

I installed Raspbian on a Vero4k+ some months ago.
While it runs stable, sound output did not work, and once installed, you cannot simply reinstall OSMC because Raspbian overwrites the boot loader.

OSMC is basically Debian plus Kodi plus a custom kernel. I’d recommend to follow sam_nazarko’s advise and simply deinstall all “mediacenter” packages (=kodi), and install pulseaudio. You probably need to run pulseaudio in system mode for headless.

If for whatever reason you really insist you want to upgrade to bookworm, try a dist-upgrade from the running OSMC and keep the old OSMC kernel. From my experience from other systems this most likely works.
