Poor 4K HDR Quality on Epson LS10000 Passing Thru Onkyo TX-NR 1010

Can we get some logs for that please?

for vero → projector only? or for the vero → avr → projector?
The vero → avr → projector is already in the first post. I’ll type the link here again
vero → avr → projector log - https://paste.osmc.tv/itibahetuw

I’ll try to ask for the vero → projector log as well.

According to user
This is the 4K

This is 1080p

His Onkyo receiver doesn’t support HDR and he is on 3.14, which doesn’t have HDR -> SDR tone-mapping.

That would explain it.

So best thing to do now is wait for 4.9 kernel?

Possibly. I’m not sure what he’s expecting to get from playing HDR content on a display that doesn’t support it however.

He mentioned that color he can adjust on the projector so it’s ok. But he’s disappointed at how 4k clarity is worse than the 1080p.

Can you check the 2 photos above? To me it looks like 4k is as clear, if not clearer than the 1080p.

Yeah would have said the same (4k more crisp), so confused about that comment. But he might actually has “shaken” when taken the 1080p picture so it’s hard to say.

Thanks. I thought it was just me. Maybe I’ll ask him to take another sample.

While generally with a native resolution of 1080p I would not expect major differences if he feets it with 1080p or 4k content. But anyhow I think it still would make sense to ask for a log for Vero connected to Projector directly playing 4k content.

I’ll try to get the logs

@fzinken @grahamh here’s the log for vero → projector - http://paste.osmc.tv/nukoxowoxu
for convenience, adding log for vero → AVR → projector - https://paste.osmc.tv/itibahetuw

Can it be seen from the logs if the AVR or the projector needs to be upgraded? Or both?

Thanks for the logs. They just confirm what others have said. The Onkyo can’t handle more than 1080p although it’s puzzling why they would advertize 4k upscaling for it. It doesn’t do HDR. The Epson does 4k but not HDR. HDR-SDR tonemapping is there in vero and always has been but the new kernel is doing it differently which some users are finding better. In my experience the picture with 3.14 is rather more saturated than with 4.9. You don’t explain whether the pics you posted are with a direct vero-epson connection or through the Onkyo. The first one looks to me like HDR being sent to a non-HDR display (rather pale and unsaturated). The second one looks like some poor up/downscaling.

For best results, the upscaling feature in the Onkyo should be turned off. Your user should get the best picture with a direct connection to the Epson but I find a 1080p picture on my 4k TV looks almost as good from a normal viewing distance. The colours should be same whether through the Onkyo or direct. If not, check the settings on the Onkyo.

HTH

PS: if the user has enabled ‘force_hdr’ through the commandline, he should disable it.

Thanks @grahamh! I’ll show him your reply.
