I own the following:
- Nvidia Shield Pro 2019
- Dune HD Homatics Box R 4K Plus
- Vero V (I also owned a 4K+)
In terms of UI rendering speed, Nvidia Shield is still faster, much faster I will say, even rendering in 4K, at least in terms of Android UI, but I guess Android UI is highly more optimized than Kodi, personally I ignore the details behind the technology and techniques used to render Kodi UI, but I always found its UI not so fluid compared with others. For instance, on Dune HD Homatics Box R 4K Plus, the rendering speed of the DuneHD Media Center app is better than Kodi, you can browse your movie catalog smoothly compared to what you can experience in Kodi in the same box, and Dune HD and Vero V shares the same chip.
I assume that Kodi uses GPU acceleration and the UI is based in textures that can be accelerated in that way, but I ignore the level of optimization they do, specially when they are more busy or centered in features related with the player.
In short, I’ve never had the feeling that Kodi runs smoothly, nothing compared with the experience you can have with UIs of apps like Apple TV+ (running on Android for instance), there is something they do better than others, same case for DuneHD app, is smoother than Kodi.
Being said all of that, and taking into consideration that there is not trace of any new Shield TV and the robust nature of Vero V as a player device (can’t say exactly the same for Dune HD one), I would get Vero V, as I did, not for the speed of the UI (it’s ok rendering in 1080p) but for the overall quality, robustness and top-notch support.
I would like to say that, imho, Vero needs to make some improvements in several parts of user experience, nowadays there are plenty of devices out there, and robustness and support are not the only things, are important, really really important, but sometimes I feel the experience provided with Kodi in Vero V a bit “meeehh” and I know, you can install skins and configure here and there, and more configuration there and there, but the default experience has it value from a customer consideration perspective, and I speak with some knowledge since it’s my job as Product Designer. Anyway I understand the limitations and resources to make Vero V shine in every aspect. Kudos always to Sam and his team for their work.
