Reboots or greenscreen at specific files - logged

Hi,

I decided to clean up and remove old Atmos demos that I never use so the plan was to go through my Atmos 2014, 2015 and 2016 folders and play the files one by one to decide which ones I want.

At Atmos 2015 I started getting green-screen, reboot, or sad smileyface-reboot first by trying to start file nr.8 but then it happened just by browsing the files and I didnt even have time to start the nr.8 before it crashed. So I started logging and then it actually worked to check some of the files but then it eventually crashed again.

The only wierd thing happening lately is that I changed from local login to Microsoft login on the media-pc that is an Windows10, I had to do this to enroll in the free security updates for Windows 10.

So that started a little problem with the shares bc of Windows hello, but I fixed it and have been using the device since then so I dont think its related but still want to mention it.

Log doesn’t seem to show Kodi crashing. Can you reproduce and re-upload?

Maybe it went green-screen and I had to reboot that time.

I will try and get it to sadsmileyface.

I got sad smiley and reboot.

I can see it in this log:

Kodi runs out of memory:

>Nov 15 18:20:57.586711 osmc kernel: Out of memory: Kill process 2944 (kodi.bin) score 587 or sacrifice child
Nov 15 18:20:57.586843 osmc kernel: Killed process 2944 (kodi.bin) total-vm:2242500kB, anon-rss:1191904kB, file-rss:1288kB, shmem-rss:0kB

Maybe use a lighter skin or reduce window size.

You are hitting the 2GB RAM limits of Vero 4K/4K+

Im using Estuary, but what do you mean by “window size”. Its 1920x1080, zoom is 0%.

Can I upgrade the RAM, and why is it happening now after all these years?

Hi,

You cannot physically upgrade the RAM

The SoC itself is limited to 3GB RAM.

As Kodi and any software matures, as do memory requirements.

Supposedly Bill Gates said in 1981 that ‘640KB should be enough for anyone’, but he later denied this in 1996. Software is becoming more bloated.

I’m still happy we can ship a full Debian based media center OS under 256M of disk space (albeit compressed) in 2025.

You could try an older version of OSMC, but keep in mind they are not maintained.

When I refer to window size, I phrased it poorly and mean the number of elements on your screen at any time. If you have 100 items on screen at time it will use more memory than 5. More scrolling, but a possible solution

Hope this helps

Sam

Ok well yeah aplications do get bigger and uses more resources and that makes alot of sense. Then the Vero V is looking pretty good for me.

You can currently get a discount by going on the upgrade page.

With that said, you might be able to get a bit more life out of your existing device by reducing the number of visible items at any time or using a lighter skin such as the OSMC skin.

Yeah well I see I bought the 4K+ in 2018 (times fly!) and it has been the best media streaming device I have ever had (before and since the Vero 4K) and I class it as one of the best purchases I have ever made, so I am ordering the V and hoping to continue having a great streaming experience.

I got the Vero V. Restored full backup. Updated. Everything seems to work perfect. No greenscreen or reboot at browsing.
