Reinstall Option

One feature I would dearly love to see in my Vero 2 is an option when selecting the Power Icon on the home page is a Reinstall feature. It would be even nicer if it threw up an option to back up settings first for later reinstall. It seems such a simple thing to me but I’m guessing in all things like this it isn’t as simple as it seems.

If this isn’t possible, can someone please send me the commands to run in SSH to completely reinstall the latest vero 2 image?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for that - of course, I do know about this longstanding and much more manual method, but since this forum is about a feature request I was hoping it could be made much simpler so I could reinstall from the pleasure of my couch. Other linux based software I use has basic “reinstall” functionality, so I was hoping it wouldn’t be too much of an ask. I’ll take it that your reply means this feature cannot/will not be considered. I appreciate you letting me know.

Quite low on the long list of more pressing items unfortunately.

Problems I see with this:

  • too many people will do it without realising the consequences (data gone)
  • people will accidentally select it if it is on the power menu
  • reinstalling over / when it is mounted is challenging, and not reliable
  • there is little benefit over manually reimaging via Download - OSMC.

Perhaps I could be persuaded to do it if I understood the benefit. The average OSMC user appears to reinstall their system once every year.

Thanks Sam, here’s my view:

  • a reinstall option should have a pop up reminding users that if they haven’t performed a back up then everything will be erased;

  • if the user ignores the warning, it’s their fault for not reading it (some software I use gives 2 warnings to make the consequences absolutely clear);

  • perhaps the reinstall could incorporate a back up first?

  • the current manual method takes me about 20-30 minutes to undertake whereas an automated method would take me seconds to choose the options and begin the process;

  • the manual process requires users to buy a second SD card which wouldn’t be necessary if it was automated.

Anyway, I appreciate the response and understand you all have more pressing tasks. For me, this is just a way to save time whenever I have to reinstall as I do try many add-ons that sometimes screw up my install in one way or another, and I also manage 3 other Vero installs for my family since I’ve convinced them to use it as their media centre.

Hi

Unfortunately, users will often read things incorrectly, and even when backups are offered, they may back up on to local (and soon to be erased storage).

But I do take your thoughts on board.

  • In the future, OSMC will be reinstallable on Vero 2 without needing an SD card. I’m thinking of a reasonable compromise, like holding down two remote keys when booting up and selecting reinstall to avoid accidental reinstallation.
  • In future, with Cloud, we will make it possible to administer OSMC systems remotely. This means you will be able to choose when your family receive updates, see what version they’re on, manage their add-ons and settings remotely. You’ll also be able to hold back updates, e.g. if Estuary in Krypton looks a little confusing, you can choose when / if they receive it. The Cloud product will be free for Vero customers and include backup space.

Thanks for the support :slight_smile:

Cheers

Sam

That sounds great Sam. I look forward to it. No problem for the support - I love Vero as I reckon it runs rings around the opposition re compatibility. If I was still working in IT doing home and business work, I’d be adding multimedia installs using Vero exclusively. :slight_smile:

We do have some commercial customers of OSMC and the Vero and we developed some management tools for them. When things are a little more consumer friendly (GUI instead of CLI), we will make them available for all Vero 2 users.
