Replace OpenSSH with DropBear

Hi,

Running OSMC on a RPi here with great results. As you know these systems can be a bit cramped on RAM, and as far as I have experience it, the second most RAM consuming task on my RPi with OSMC besides kodi.bin is OpenSSH.

I replaced it with DropBear (Dropbear SSH) which is already available on the default package repositories, it’s basically a drop in replacement so no further configuration is needed, and because of its small memory footprint, it’s much more suited for small, embedded systems.

Regards

We used to use Dropbear in the past on AppleTV and in very early stages of Raspbmc.

I prefer openssh-server for reliability and security. When using SCP, the openssh binaries are usually used anyway. I don’t think the benefit of a few MB of RAM is worth the change.
