Slow smb and fstab but upnp fine UHD

Hi new vero 4k user , really like the product so far however I am having issues with uhd content on smb and fstab , whenever I try to play video it will play for a minute tops then I notice in corner of player its 0% cache and freezes.

When using upnp I have no issues but I cant use movie scrapper with this , when I access the smb or mnt mount via fstab I notice its also slow to ready directories and it doesent matter if its wired or wireless its still the same result.

I was hoping someone could be of assistance  ive tried searching google endlessly and also done the advancedsettings.xml as advised in another thread before posting here.

my server is win10 , as I say upnp is fine no issues but smb and fstab are slow.

Hi,

To get a better understanding of the problem you are experiencing we need more information from you. The best way to get this information is for you to upload logs that demonstrate your problem. You can learn more about how to submit a useful support request here.

So, in summary:

  • activate the logging
  • reboot the OSMC device
  • reproduce the issue
  • upload the log set either using the Log Uploader method within the My OSMC menu in the GUI or the ssh method invoking command grab-logs -A
  • publish the provided URL from the log set upload, here

Thanks for your understanding. We hope that we can help you get up and running again shortly.

Tom.

I noticed in logs that it looks like via fstab I’m getting buffer timeout , I have no idea why thou as I say upnp is fine … appreciate any help comments please

Hi,

I moved your new topic here, as it appeared to be a duplicate.

I think it could a bandwidth issue, I would try testing the network with iperf3.

You can download for Windows here: https://iperf.fr/

On vero4k:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install iperf3

On windows 10:

iperf3 -s

on vero4k:

iperf3 -c 192.168.0.12 -t 60

Post results here.

Thanks Tom.

Hi thanks for your reply I’ll try your suggestion and post back within hour appreciated.

Can I ask if it’s bandwidth issue how come upnp plays fine ? Is there some kind of limitation via fstab ?

Again thank you for taking the time to reply

Hi,

Is the upnp server on the windows 10 machine aswell?

Thanks Tom.

Yes it is on the same server. I would be happy with upnp but can’t use the movie scrapper via this method.

Im just guessing here but could it be how my fstab lines are ie :-

====================== fstab =================== qiE9Dtax

rootfs is not mounted in fstab as we do it via initramfs. Uncomment for remount (slower boot)

Hi,

Ok so the network looks fine.

Could you please provide mediainfo for the movie tested in the logs provided.

Also have you tried playing the video from usb?

Also what are using for upnp?

Thanks Tom.

I would post media info but see no point as it does it with any uhd movie on smb network so we can rule out encoding issue + it plays fine on upnp.

Just standard windows upnp haven’t tried USB and no way to try it as have no usb media big storage enougth

Maybe Windows UPNP does some kind of transcoding which reduces bandwidth? I don’t know a lot about it

It does no transcoding upnp just a file server essentially.

If it works – is there a reason not to use it?

Well with upnp I can’t use movie scrapper so no posters IMDb information etc

I would have expected UPNP to be much slower.
Did you try a Kodi SMB mount instead of fstab?

Yep also tried kodi smb share , same thing as fstab movie plays for 5 ish seconds then buffer timeouts … Like the buffer isent being used im guessing I’m not sure

If you pause it and press context menu then OK, do you see a buffer increasing?

Can you confirm you haven’t changed advancedsettings.xml?

Sam

I’d be interested in seeing the results from running ifstat with SMB (using fstab) and also UPnP.

To do so, take a look at this post. There will be no need to run with nohup, which allows the job to continue when you exit from the SSH session, so something like:

ifstat -nt -i eth0 >/home/osmc/smb.out 2>&1
ifstat -nt -i eth0 >/home/osmc/upnp.out 2>&1

will give us an idea of what’s happening on the network when using SMB and UPnP, respectively. Let each job run as long as you think necessary, then Ctrl-C to end it. Please upload the files produced to the OSMC pastebin using the command paste-log <filename>.

my advancedsettings.xml :-

memorysize>524880000 buffermode>1 readfactor>5.0

ignore format above had to take stuff out to make it forum friendly.

ill try ifstat and post back later tonight watching movie on box at moment

Thanks for replys feedbacks so far guys appreciated , I’m sure its a simple setting somewhere missing or needs tweaking as upnp fine well get there

Sam , No if I pause it the buffer does not fill up , I think according to the logs this is because of buffer timeout but I’m no expert so just guessing.

Gave up in the end , tinkering with advancedsettings made no differnce. Installed FTP server and now able to use movie scrapper unlike upnp :grinning:
