Solution to Network Share Error with windows

I have used my Vero 4k+ for years now, playing video from my WIN7 pc that was added as an smb share. Videos are in the Movies or TV section of the library fine.

I am in the process of migrating to a WIN 11 pc. I have hit a dead end adding it as an SMB share, I get the dreaded ‘Opperation not allowed’.

I have added the WIN11 pc as a UPN decive and can access the files on the PC from the Vero.

What I can’t seem to do is get the videos into the library. The only way I can access them is

Video, fies, add videos, UPN source. Then I can explore the folders, but there is no information etc. I can’t see a scan to library option.

I hope I am just missing something obvious ?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Greetings,

I’ve ran into this (only stupid windows) error. I had to copy my files instead of “cut and paste”

Kodi can browse and play from a UPnP source, but it does not allow for this connection type to be used as a source for a library. Are you using the same machine name and/or IP address with the new PC as you did with the old? If so you might need to look into your Vero’s file system at the file ~/.kodi/userdata/passwords.xml which is the file that contains the credentials used for network sources. Obviously the username and password will need to match up with what is configured in your new PC.

On that note, in case you are not aware, Win7 allows guest sharing (sharing files without a password) but Windows 11 by default does not. Things can get a bit more confusing with microsoft accounts. If you hadn’t already I’d recommend making a local account just for the purpose of media sharing and then configure Kodi to use those credentials…

Firstly, Many thanks for your help. Think you might be on to something with the Network issue. Answers to what you raise below.

The pcs have different names, and both appear when I look for SMB shares, just the win11 pc rejects the connection.

I turned off passwordless access on the win11 pc, added a new user for Vero use on the win11 pc. Once I did this using this user the win7 pc was able to access the win11 pc, but was rejected before. But still the vero rejects it.

The win11 pc does have a microsoft account, but the win7 pc did not. I set up the win11 pc using that account. Could this be the issue ?

Thanks again.

You can do file sharing with the microsoft account but there is a couple potential issues. The first is what the actual user account is, the second is you would be using your email password for access to local assets that will ultimately be stored in plain text. Because of this, making a local account where the credentials are of much less consequence is a much better idea. When you configure your file share just make sure that your share and NTFS file permissions of your media shared folder/s are configured for “everyone” and not just your primary account.

Thanks again.

I created a new user osmc, that is admin and has its own password. The share is with eveyone. User osmc can access the shares from the win7 PC.

You mention NTFS, I have been using smb share on the vero as this worked with the win7 pc and still does.

If I try the NFTS option to add a share on the vero it sits there for 30s gives nothing and jumps back. Is this the issue do I need to turn on NTFS pm the vero some how ?

I think you might be confusing NTFS, the default file system in Windows for internal drives, with NFS, a network file sharing protocol that is commonly used in Linux, but has no native server support in most versions of Windows. I was saying that NTFS has file permissions and when you use a secondary account to access a file share permissions may have to be added depending on where the share is located. For example, if you were to share a folder on a non boot disk normally all user accounts would have read and write permissions by default. On the other hand, if someone were to share a folder from their desktop then normally only that user account would have access.

Sharing via Windows default SMB protocol works just fine with OSMC. If the share is working with the new credentials to your Windows 7 PC then it should work with OSMC as well. I’d suggest to go videos>files and add a new share and then choose the option to add a new network location. In that screen enter only the machine name or IP address (no shares or subfolders) and your new username and password. Once you click OK on that screen there should be a new location in the list. Try browsing from that.

If for some reason that doesn’t do it then take a look, or just rename, your passwords.xml file and reboot Kodi to reset what credentials it has stored.

Adding it as a new network location worked perfectly.

MANY THANKS for so much help !!!.

Is there a good cause close to your heart ? If so post a link and l will make a donation as way of a thank you.
