Sometimes HDR just doesnt work on my equipment

Hi, this is probably not a Vero thing even, but maybe someone knows what is the culprit because I cant make heads or tales of it.

Problem: Sometimes HDR does not work and I get a washed out picture like the tv is not reading the flag. I dont understand what content will work and what content will not work, I have to trial and error.

I dont know if the problem is:
The tv: (a samsung flagship from 2018 (Q9FN) that supports HDR, HDR10 and HDR10+)
My reciever: Yamaha 3060
Something else? Since it works in gaming and most movies its a little wierd.

For sciense I tested these 2 movies:
1. The Fantastic 4 First Steps 2025 2160p iT WEB-DL DD+5.1 Atmos DoVi HDR10+ H.265-BYNDR
Info: It claims to be “HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision”
(Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, Profile 8.1, dvhe.08.06, BL+RPU, no metadata compression, HDR10 compatible / SMPTE ST 2094 App 4, Version HDR10+ Profile A, HDR10+ Profile A compatible, PQ)

Does it work: Yes this shows in HDR for me through the Vero, Yamaha and onto the tv.

2 Five Nights at Freddys 2 2025 2160p ATV WEB-DL DDP5.1 Atmos DV HDR H.265-KRATOS
Info: It claims to be “HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision”
(Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, dvhe.08.06, BL+RPU, HDR10 compatible / SMPTE ST 2094 App 4, Version 1, HDR10+ Profile B compatible, PQ)

Does it work: No it does not engage HDR in my tv and the picture is washed out.

Any ideas?

If you upload a log when it doesn’t work, we should be able to see why.
Perhaps the EDID is not correctly propagating HDR support

Sam

This is where 1 movie fail to display in HDR (this movie fails every time always).

I also have another problem, after a litttle while after using the Vero V it has started to randomly freeze in the menus at different times, it can freeze for up to 10 seconds it feels like, and its at completely random places. It freezes, and it will remember my inputs - it comes to life and executes the inputs done while it was frozen. In these logs it actually froze when me just pressing “stop” to stop the movie.

Here is another one that does not fallback on HDR for me.

https://paste.osmc.tv/lecijejesu

Info:
HEVC, Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, dvhe.08.06, BL+RPU, HDR10 compatible / SMPTE ST 2094 App 4, Version 1, HDR10+ Profile B compatible, PQ

This and the other one that didnt work have in common they are “Profile B compatible” that I dont know what it means, and this information isnt even on all movies so I dont know if its important.

I don’t think Profile B is a problem. Plenty of Profile B HDR10+ titles play OK here. One thing I notice is those two clips have been cropped to 3836 wide so they are playing at 1080p24. That shouldn’t affect HDR though.

Your Yamaha has some video processing smarts. Are they all turned off, and does the Yamaha report it’s receiving HDR?

To be sure the Yamaha isnt the problem I connected the Vero V directly to the tv and its exactly the same. The same HDR movies that showed in HDR before still does, and the same ones that didnt - still doesnt.

But to answer your question, all prosessing is turned off and its set to passthrough without processing. Also all other HDR I can think of does work, Apple-TV, Netflix, PS4, PS5, Switch 2, everything through the Yamaha.

Now the Yamaha is old, and the 185 page manual only has the word “HDR” in one place. And no it does not rapport HDR anywhere. It is good at reporting the soundinformation but doesnt actually report the current video (I have always used the tv for that, not only is it a 1500nits tv with no dimming of the internal menus in HDR so there is no chance to make a misstake if its HDR or not, it also flawlessly repports HDR in the menu).

The Yamaha is said to be “HDCP 2.2 / 4K / 60p / 4:4:4 / BT.2020 compliant” and the manual only says things like Features: -4k UltraHD Video 10/12 bit, -HDR, -Deep color, etc.

I kinda feel like its the DV that screws things up since neither my TV or reciever supports it, but I have tried content without DV (only HDR10/HDR10+) that also didnt lock to HDR so Im a little unsure what the problem is. If the content says “hybrid” I think it always works for me, and if it doesnt say “hybrid” and the info says it has DV amongst the other HDR formats - it usually doesnt work, but sometimes do.

Here is another one that does not work:

Not any DV in this one its said to be HDR10+
Codec…: HEVC, SMPTE ST 2094 App 4, Version 1, HDR10+ Profile B compatible, PQ

You’ll have to upload a short sample of one of these clips somewhere so we can test them independently.

Ok I will try but that might take a little time, but so what is happening in the logs, does the file have the HDR flag, does it try to execute HDR?

Here is a file that does work and shows in HDR for me:

Here is file that does not work and does not show in HDR and is washed out and unwatchable:

Yes, your log says this:

Your ‘bad’ clip plays fine here, and at 4k24Hz. I think you would get 4k playback if you set up a whitelist and included 4k modes. I’m afraid I’ve no idea why you are not getting HDR.

Is there a guide for setting up whitelists?

Ok thanks for trying out the HDR, its super annoying and I have no idea why it sometimes just doesnt work.

I will start a new thread for my other problem since its a totally different thing.
