Sound ticks after Nov 2021 upgrade

I upgraded my Vero 4K+ today (from Nov 2020, kernel 3.14.29-160-osmc) to 2021.11-2.
(I had to run “apt-get update --allow-releaseinfo-change” to get the upgrade working, which was done directly in Kodi / MyOSMC afterwards.)

After boot, an annoying ticking sound occurs approximately every two seconds – this happens without doing anything. Playback of music and video is stuttering. This all worked well before the upgrade.

My Vero is connected via HDMI directly to my TV (Samsung), which again is using ARC via HDMI to my amplifier (Denon).

What is the audio output set under settings - system - audio?

Also suggest to correct the Video settings as below

We recommend people with 4K TV’s set their user interface (UI) to 1080p. Kodi’s UI is not optimized for 4K yet and this can put unnecessary demands on your device and can lead to a suboptimal picture quality, as well as potentially cause other issues.

The settings we recommend are as follows…

Settings>System>Display>Resolution> 1920x1080p
Settings>System>Display>Whitelist> (empty) *
Settings>Player>Videos>Adjust display refresh rate> On start/stop

Some televisions may also need, or benefit from, the following being set…

System>Display>Force 4:2:2 colour subsampling> (enable)

With the above settings your UI will be output in Full HD and your 4K content will be output in 4K. *Information regarding the whitelist can be found here. If you have any doubt, feel free to upload some logs so we can verify that your settings are indeed correct.

Hi besides the GUI resolution, your Samsung TV reports to be only able to process PCM but you configured the Vero to use audio passthrough for AC3 (Dolby) and DTS.

So, with this cabling I suggest to deactivate passthrough completely at settings -> system -> audio.
The obvious question is: Why you didn’t connect the Vero to the Denon amp?

“Default (AML-MESONAUDIO: HDMI, S/PDIF & analogue)”. I’ve tried setting all to defaults in audio and display to no avail (those were the settings from the initial log upload).

Changing display resolution to 1920x1080p 50Hz solves the problem; no periodic ticking sounds in the UI, and music and movie playback works.

When running in this resolution however, it seems like the outer edges of the picture are lost (e.g. the clock is partially outside the screen, as are some UI elements when pressing OK during movie playback).

I’m fairly certain that my configuration was set at 4k before the upgrade (either 50 or 60 Hz, can’t remember), so this feels like a step back.

Anyway, I can use the Vero again – thanks :slight_smile:

I’ve changed the setting on the TV to pass through bitstream instead of PCM; thanks.

As for the suboptimal connection – my Denon amp is old and does not support 4k :frowning: So currently I have all non-4k sources connected directly to the amp, whereas 4k sources are connected to the TV with audio return channel to the amp.

It’s next on my list …

It seems you have a issue with Overscan. Ensure that you did not have any calibration configuration in Kodi/OSMC and use one of the following methods depending on the TV Brand you use.

  • Samsung TV - go to Menu / Picture / Picture Options / Size / Screen Fit (instead of 16:9).
  • LG TV - go to Settings / Picture / Aspect Ratio / Just Scan (instead of 16:9)
  • Sony TV - hit Home button, go to Settings / Screen / Display Area / Full Pixel
  • Sharp TV - hit View Mode button, select “Dot by Dot” or “Full screen”
  • Sharp Aquos - go to Menu / System Options / View Option / View Mode / Dot by Dot
  • Panasonic TV - go to Menu / Picture / Screen Settings / 16:9 Overscan / Off
