SSH install PSmisc ... Please Help?

Hi Sam and everyone,

Hope you’re all doing well.

I would like to ask you all if you there is a (newbee) idiot proof guide to installing PSmisc via SSH?

Can you access SSH only connecting the Vero 4K to the TV thru HDMI?

How does one get to a command prompt to type: “sudo apt-get update”

Or the rest required to install the PSmisc which the Killall + Pidof apps are a part of…

I have had raspberry pi 1-3 and vaguely remember doing this under a windows environment many years ago on the PI, but now also not having any windows or Mac devices available. Only Linux and also new to that. I can’t seem to find any full comprehensive guides on doing this sort of stuff on the Vero 4K.

Until about a month ago, I had Open VPN Manager working as was the case with my PI’s.
A month ago after a Vero Update, I can no longer connect to any VPN. Error messages of the likes: “Killall and Pidof not installed, you need to install them and make sure they are in the command line…blah blah”

I just want my VPN running again…

Maybe I should have not bought 4 of these things, because now I’m having to try and learn once again how to get this thing running.

Any tips and or advice or links to a full (idiot proof) guide to get my VPN working would be appreciated.

Really, I have no idea where to start.

Can I connect the Vero to a Linux PC?
Or can I Install this PSmisc package via a Repository. That would be the easiest way for this mental Neanderthal.

Please help…?

Thank you for listening…
B.

Well, considering that the Vero is Linux based… I suspect it can be done

How about (from your linux system):

ssh osmc@<name or IP of vero>

with osmc as the password.

Thank you bmill for your rapid reply.

I will try to connect it using a USB cable now and see what happens.

As I said I am also new to Linux, so it’s trying to push the proverbial (cough cough) up hill.

But I will try that.

Thanks for your input…

You don’t need a USB cable. Just ssh in from a terminal on your linux system.

Oh so whilst it’s still connected to the tv and connected to the network…?

Great, because I just tried to connect it to the computer and nothing is detected…

Thank you mate!

I will try that…

Bmillham do you mind me asking,

By just opening a terminal window and typing the command you wrote before… should it just automatically find the device if my IP address for the Vero is correct?

I have tried what you suggested and my terminal window is stating:
“No such file or directory”

So it’s obviously not working for me…

I guess you might mistyped the command. Can you copy and paste what you entered in the terminal

Thanks also fzinken,

I feel even more stupid now.

I forgot about that wonderful little program…
Putty

That’s how I connected to my Vero over the network.

I would like to thank bmillham (especially) and fzinken for your guidance.

Very much appreciate now everything is running fine.

Thanks guys once again.

A little guide for anyone that found themselves in the same dilemma with my ability and technical knowledge.

Guide:

Make sure your Vero is connected to your network (either wired or wirelessly)

Make sure you have SSH enabled in your settings on your Vero.

  • go to OSMC Settings App on your TV.
  • select App Store - and make sure SSH is downloaded and installed.

Go to your computer - Linux for me, but Windows & MAC have the program : PUTY

Install Puty

Open puty and connect to your Vero via entering the IP Adress of your Vero. Under Host Name or IP Adress text box

Once a Puty Command window opens.

  • it will ask you …: Login As?
    Type: osmc
    Password: osmc

Type command:

Sudo apt-get update - enter
Sudo apt-get install psmisc- enter

It will then download and install PSmisc into your Vero system and will now have the Killall app once again in the command line directory of your Vero.

Allowing you to once again connect thru Open VPN Manager…

Yeah…!

Thanks again to bmillham for his time and effort…

May the force be with you…!

I’ll just put this here
