Subtitles only show the first line of text

I’ve started to use my Vero 4K+ again but have noticed that subtitles, which would normally go into a 2nd and sometimes a 3rd line, is only showing the first line of text.

I have tried to shorten each line length via Subtitle Edit but this is an arduous task for my library.

I can’t find any refrence to this in the forum so presume I’m doing something wrong. Can any one help please

Where is that line? Could it be that the second line is just outside of the screen?

Yes it definately is, so how can the the text be raised so that all lines are visible?

Well first question to ask is the subtitle to low or could it be that the whole picture is bigger than what it is shown on the TV?

First step is to check your TV’s settings for overscan to make sure that the whole of Kodi is being shown. If when you play a video and you click the OK/Select button the OSD appears to be shown normally in full then this probably isn’t the issue.

Next thing to look at is when playing a video bring up the OSD and bring up the video settings and then to calibration. There should be a line shown typically centered up a bit from the bottom. If this isn’t showing you can click the select button in that screen once to move the selection to the bottom right calibration, and then again to move the selection to the subtitle position. With that highlighted you can use the direction up button to shift the line up. Alternatively click select button till the reset option in that screen is highlighted and then click select once more to activate it.

Finally the last place that adjustments can be made is at settings>player>subtitles. Specifically if you use overscan on your TV to fill the screen on purpose you might change the position to bottom of video from the default of bottom of screen.

Thank you. Let me check on these and I will reply.

It seems you have an issue with Overscan. Ensure that you did not have any calibration configuration in Kodi/OSMC and use one of the following methods depending on the TV Brand you use.

  • Samsung TV - go to Menu / Picture / Picture Options / Size / Screen Fit (instead of 16:9).
  • LG TV - go to Settings / Picture / Aspect Ratio / Just Scan (instead of 16:9)
  • Sony TV - hit Home button, go to Settings / Screen / Display Area / Full Pixel
  • Sharp TV - hit View Mode button, select “Dot by Dot” or “Full screen”
  • Sharp Aquos - go to Menu / System Options / View Option / View Mode / Dot by Dot
  • Panasonic TV - go to Menu / Picture / Screen Settings / 16:9 Overscan / Off

Thank you, I will check and advise.

Thank you fzinken and darwindesign for your feplies. I had the same problem on a monitor so I felt sure the problem was with my settings in Kodi.

I spent a hour adjusting all possible subtitle settings to no avail. Seeing I had no problems in the past I decided to reset to default wherever I was able.
I have now solved the problem with:
Settings - Interface - Skin - Reset to Default.
The screen immediately went from black lines top and bottom to full screen!
Subtitles an now appeaping perfectly.

Again thank you for your input.
