[TESTING] Vero V: Dolby Vision FEL support

Folks I just came back from a six months trip and I tried watching a rip of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 on my Vero 5, E01 was fine because it didn’t contain DV but E02 with DV showed with green tint. I was surprised as that hadn’t happened for quite a while. So I updated the firmware and now instead of showing a green tint it shows a black screen but when I stop the playback then the whole Kodi is messed up visually. Have to restart Kodi. What’s also interesting is that episodes from season 1 that used to display correctly on my Vero 5 now have the same problem.

(I’m quite jet lagged with 20+ hours of flights and bit confused but at one point I enabled passthru in my AV to try to help fix the problem so the different change in symtoms I described might also have been caused by me playing with this setting in the AV).

I’ve read countless threads here but I’m a bit confused, is there actually an update coming soon that should fix these problems? I disabled DV for now in Kodi.

Did you use the updating instructions at the top of this thread? If not, please try that.

So the idea is to test using the staging build right? Okay, I’ll try to do this this week. Thanks for the good work by the way.

Since that update I watched several DV movies (mostly WEB, but also some Bluray). Also some SDR and all kinds of test files I found and all played perfectly fine. Well done!

Another user has reported problems with a Daredevil episode and uploaded a sample here. It plays fine on my Philips OLED806 but not on his Panasonic Z95B. What TV do you have?

Grateful if other users can test this, especially those with very new TVs, eg @JimKnopf.

The clip URL may not give access to those outside the OSMC team. If so, let us know.

My TV is an LG OLED C2. I’m using a Sony STR-DH190 STR-DH590 as the receiver, it’s just a basic 5.1 receiver.

Would you like me to try a bunch of other movies and TV shows that has DV? I’ve got a bunch of them that I was trying to watch with my old Shield TV before I bought the Vero 5 (once I found out my Shield TV 2017 didn’t support DV).

This is a DV profile 8.1 video clip. During playback, I see a black screen for a fraction of a second, immediately followed by the TV’s Dolby Vision logo and then the media center’s GUI (in bright, flashing colors). In the background, the playback is running as pure audio playback; here in Hindi, since the player’s default language is neither Hindi nor English, and therefore the first audio track was selected.

This occurs both with VeroV running the current developer staging directly connected to a Philips OLED910 TV and with a VeroV running the official OSMC release version connected to an HDMI path Sony STR-DN 1080 AVR → Philips OLED910.

Yes, please. That’s the point of this testing channel :stuck_out_tongue:

It looks very bad on my setup: logs https://paste.osmc.tv/sasiveturi

black bars are red, the rest is just bright colors everywhere (mostly red, green and purple), sound is good. DV Logo from TV is showing correctly though.

TV: LG OLED CX65; AVR: Denon X3400h; Player: Vero V with the beta version from this thread

And I use Jellyfin as Backend for KODI and I renamed the file, so Jellyfin would pick it up automatically.

I also got a different DV 8.1 file of Daredevil which has the same issue.

edit: I now also tried Daredevil as a Profile 5 Dolby Vision file and it has the same color issue. Fallback to HDR10 (when forced in the player) works fine.

So I’m testing a few videos and here’s the results:

  • Jurrasic World Rebirth: TV showing artifcats, DV logo showing up. Kodi is fine once I stop the movie.
  • Project Hail Mary: OK
  • The Fantastic 4: First Steps: black screen, but Kodi is fine when I stop the movie.
  • Weapons: OK
  • I Know What You Did Last Summer: OK
  • Karate Kids: Legends: OK
  • Chief of War S01E02/E03: OK
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S03E01/E02/E04: OK
  • Stranger Things S04: OK
  • Foundation S03E10: OK
  • Dexter: Ressurection S01E10: OK
  • Star Wars: Andor S02: I’m pretty sure it worked the first time somehow, but after I pressed stop I couldn’t make it work again, only black screen, even after rebooting Kodi.
  • The Lords of the Rings: The Rings of Power S02E08 (the episode that made me leave Shield TV): Black screen, used to work with Vero 5.

I’m actually installing a new Sony 7.1 receiver today so I might not be able to test for a day or two but would gladly help after this. I will retest these videos with my new receiver, but I’m guessing this won’t make any difference since the receiver just passes the signal (with passthru), right?

Maybe you will want the log for Jurrasic World as it shows green artifacts? I’m very rusty and don’t remember how to do any of this but I can get my hands dirty again if it can help. I’m also using a Chromebook for the TV which isn’t great for SSH but doable. Also maybe you’ll care more about any reporting once I install the staging version?

Thank you. A short sample of any videos that don’t play nicely would be better than logs.

Just wanted to add that so far everything I throw at this test build is working smoothly - but I do have to note that I rip everything myself, so no downloads with potential quality issues.

That said, I do experience the occasional hang where the whole system freezes - I think it occurs especially when I fast forward. I don’t think I can reliably reproduce the issue. Not sure if it’s related to the DV code, or a general bug.

Folks, I’m flabbergasted. So yesterday I installed my new receiver, upgraded from a Sony STR-DH190 STR-DH590 to a Sony STR-AN1000 and all of the problematic DV video files are now playing flawlessly. The only setting I adjusted on my new receiver is passthru to on but it’s only for when the receiver is off so it shouldn’t really affect anything.

Anyone has an idea why a new receiver might change playback behaviour? I’m using the same HDMI cables. Still connected to my LG OLED C2 TV.

My knowledge on this topic is quite limited but I assumed the receiver was simply passing the video data to the TV without processing anything.

 The STR-DH190 is an analog amplifier!? Either there is a typo in the model string or you’re now using a complete different setup.

Sorry about that, I’ll edit my posts. I’m running on fumes at the moment. My previous receiver was a Sony STR-DH590.

Did you ever check to enable full color passthrough on the old model? This is sometimes a setting per receiver.
Per review I found:

By default, all four HDMI inputs are set to Standard mode. However, to enable full 4K/60p 4:4:4 HDR passthrough, the BD/DVD and Media Box inputs must be manually set to Enhanced mode in the HDMI settings.

Good catch and that’s actually what I did before I ran the tests I listed on Monday. From what I can remember, symptoms became a bit different after the update (black screen and no more green artifact messing up the interface after playing the Daredevil video).

The Sony STR-DH590 was released in 2018, we could potentially blame these problems on the fact that the receiver is a bit old? Keep in mind that all my DV media was working OK back in september (without enhanced mode) before I left for 6+ months. Seems my old DV media stopped working after I did the last available update.

I’m still amazed that all of my DV media is working flawlessly with my new receiver, even without the staging build. That’s an extra bonus I didn’t expect when buying it!

Ah! So you haven’t tried with the staging build?

No and now everything works with my new receiver even without the staging build!

Any clip you’d like me to try with my new receiver?

I’m quite confused by all of this. How can hardware fix a “software” issue?

Understandably. The staging build merely adds FEL support. The November release did play DV and trigger DV on the TV, just without the extra FEL fairy dust.

Who said it was a software issue? It could be as simple as changing over the HDMI cables scrubbed off 6 months of corrosion on the contacts.

Anything that didn’t work before you changed it. If you update to staging, any DV Profile 7 title.
