[TESTING] Vero V: Dolby Vision TV led support

Wrong IP in your SSH? Do you have any Vero 4ks active?

I have no idea how that happened. I do have 4Ks but this is weird.
Here are the correct logs from the Vero V. These are slightly edited:

https://paste.osmc.tv/uyinodiyey.xml

No sign of a DV-capable display in that log. Was a TV connected?

Yes. And it showed Dolby Vision on the TV when I started viewing the movies.

Thought I’d do a quick test of Dolby Vision playback on my Vero-V (+ Yamaha RX-A2A/LG OLED48CX6LB)

After updating to to the development sources - ‘osmc-devl.list’ (noting that I am on kernel 4.9.269-72-osmc), I tried a couple of test files with the following results :

  1. Profile 7 - ‘Hybrid HDR10Plus DV Sample.mkv’
The TV indicated in that it had detected ‘Dolby Vision’ (top right hand corner of the screen), however the screen remained completely blank/black with the audio playing OK.

  2. Profile 5 - ‘dolby-vision-amaze-(dolby-vision)-(www.demolandia.net).mp4’
The TV indicated that it had detected ‘Dolby Vision’, the screen remained completely blank/black with staggered audio playback.

  3. Profile 4 - ‘LG Demo DolbyVision Comparison.mkv’
Seemed to play OK, but TV did not detect this as DV.

The debug log is here https://paste.osmc.tv/arocabiriv and should show these three attempts.

Is there an obvious answer to this ? Do I need to adjust any settings on the TV ?

The Vero-V Player Settings were set to allow DV (i.e. HDR processing is set to HDR (Auto)).

Hi Chris

Regarding Profile 4: please see the Implementation section of my original post. This is expected behaviour.

Will check the other issues reported shortly. Thanks for the log.

Attached - the media info for the Profile 5 & 7 test files.

Thanks for the report. Regrettably, you re-booted after playing those clips so the kernel log doesn’t cover the time when you played them.

Can you repeat the P5 and P7 clips after turning off re-scanning the library on restart and rebooting. It looks like your logs may have been too long to upload.

If possible, can you try connecting Vero direct to the TV?

That’s interesting. I just checked that Amaze download and got this (very different)

Completely different profile. Chris’ Amaze video isn’t Profile 5 at all which is odd…

No. The 2 mediainfos he posted are the same.

I turned off library scanning+rebooted twice and repeated the profile 7 & 5 tests, with HDMI connections Vero-V > Yamaha RX-A2A > LG-OLED48CX6LB

  1. Profile 7 - ‘Hybrid HDR10Plus DV Sample.mkv’
The TV indicated in that it had detected ‘Dolby Vision’ (top right hand corner of the screen), however the screen remained completely blank/black with the audio playing OK.

  2. Profile 5 - ‘dolby-vision-amaze-(dolby-vision)-(www.demolandia.net ).mp4’
The TV indicated that it had detected ‘Dolby Vision’, the screen remained completely blank/black with staggered audio playback.

HDMI connection: Vero-V > LG-OLED48CX6LB

Results for the Vero-V connected directly to the TV were the same (i.e. blank/black video, with Dolby Vision detected), except for the audio which played correctly for profile 5 (i.e. it wasn’t staggered and suggests the AVR is limiting performance throughput to the audio in some way).

Simply put that’s profile 5 as opposed to 7 and the audio EAC3-JOC as opposed TrueHD. I think the ‘demolandia’ site previously had other versions of these test files.

I’ve uploaded the profile 5 & 7 test files I used to my Google Drive, here:

Can you try setting adjust refresh rate to on start/stop?

I have exactly the same files here. You have two settings which are different from mine:

  • quantization set to full-range. This is not necessary and could be counter-productive
  • refreshrate set to Always. There’s an internal debate here about the best setting. I’ve always set it to On start/stop

I changed my settings to match yours and got an occasional blank screen with Amaze but mostly it worked OK. I haven’t yet had a blank screen with the Hybrid clip.

Thanks Graham,

A change of the ‘Display Refresh Rate’ to START/STOP made no difference, so I have kept that set at ALWAYS (settings>player settings>videos).

A change to ‘Use Limited Colour Range’ from OFF to ON, made all the difference and video playback for the two test files (and others) was restored (settings>system>display).

However, the audio on playback of the Profile 5 file - ‘dolby-vision-amaze’ still has staggered audio playback. The AVR status display seemed to indicate that it wasn’t happy with the audio format and kept randomly switching from ‘decoder off’ to ‘Dolby ATMOS’, furthermore this wasn’t a problem with the Vero-V connected directly to the TV (as the audio is down-converted to AC3 before being passed back to the AVR using the HDMI ‘ARC’ (and not eARC)).

On occasions after stopping/starting (seeking) I have noted the display colours revert to the purple/green combination, this was then only resolved by rebooting. I think this is probably a file with some irregularities format wise, as many other DV + ATMOS files that I have played fine, both audio and video.

This ‘irregular’ DV Profile 5 file is here, and it would probably be a good idea to take a deeper look at this.

Interesting, thanks.

My AVR doesn’t do Atmos but my TV says it does FWIW. I’ll check that out. I wonder what the current release OSMC would make of it (ie is it because of our DV implementation or is it a problem with the file). I wonder about the parentage of that Amaze clip. I have a version that’s slightly different and someone once posted a clip of it which was different again.

What do you mean by that? Stuttering?

Stuttering is probably a better word, nevertheless staggered wrt time.

The audio repeatedly stops and starts with short silences of variable lengths, usually less than a second at most.

Is it more like it’s dropping out? You’re hearing half the audio and when it comes back you hear half of that too?

Yes, I think its dropping out and is also out of synch.

At the very end of the playback, as can be seen in the video below, it seems the audio is out of synch with the video stream. When the video stream completes the stuttering audio stream continues.

Of all the DV video file playbacks I have tried, so far, this is the only one with this issue on the Vero-V.

All I can say is I can’t reproduce that here - playing direct to my TV which indicates both DV and Atmos. Not using ARC.

We would need debug logs with the video component and audio sync component engaged to investigate further.

Let us know if you find any other vids with that quirk.
