Transmission can’t bind port/sockets, can’t connect to a certain tracker

Hiya,

Pi3 with latest OSMC here. Transmission installed from the OSMC app store is working fine, however, since around september 2017 or so I noticed Transmission Remote GUI showing the “Could not connect to tracker” status way too often. While download and upload are fine, peers connect etc., there’s this one tracker to which Transmission won’t connect. It’s http://tracker.trackerfix.com:80/announce
Port forwarding is enabled and working in the router. Static public IPv4 by the way, no IPv6 in WAN or LAN. I’d like to keep UPnP disabled. The Pi3 fetches a non-changing local IPv4 from router’s DHCP.

Yes, trackers come, trackers go, however, there are no search engine hits for trackerfix.com going offline. ps aux | grep transmission says there’s only one instance of transmission running.
It’s not about http/udp, different torrents from trackers http://tracker.raspberrypi.org:6969/announce and udp://9.rarbg.me:2710 are working fine.
I already went through the hits for Couldn’t bind port 51413 on 0.0.0.0 searches – none of the solutions apply.

Any ideas? Cheers!

Hi,

Are you running transmission with openvpn?

Thanks Tom.

Nope, no VPN.

Hi,

Ok possibly a couple stupid questions here, but lets get them out of the way:

Have you manually set the port forward on the router, if you are not using upnp?

If you have, are you sure the port forward is setup correctly?

As for upnp - Although it is true there was massive security issue with this a few years back, most modern (if not all) routers have resolved this issue and it would probably be easier just to enable; and let transmission and the router automatically sort it out.

Thanks Tom.

transmission is configured to use port 51413, which is forwarded to Pi3’s local IP

Transmission Remote GUI’s port check tool says Incoming port tested successfully. canyouseeme.org says so, too.

Maybe I’m a little paranoid, but I’d like to keep port forwarding done manually, and not have devices do that on their own via UPnP. Control > convenience, in my eyes.

Hi,

My only other thought is it could be a dns issue, as transmission uses dns to find the trackers when it first opens a torrent, then moves over to ip only after finding seeds & peers.

If you are using your isps dns, you could try opendns or even googles.

Thanks Tom.

Using 91.239.100.100 (Danish censor-free DNS) and 85.214.20.141 (German NGO censor-free DNS) at the moment. Yeah, tinfoil hat. Neither my ISP’s nor Google’s 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 do any help. In fact, it’s even worse with them and transmission can’t connect to any tracker except for http://tracker.raspberrypi.org:6969/announce
tracker.trackerfix.com correctly resolves to 176.31.225.118 on the Pi3.

If everything should be running correctly and you can’t see anything wrong, I’ll just write it off as a kind of bug, since dl/ul are working with proper rates.

I think this confirms its a dns issue, you could try another censor-free dns; or as you say except it as a bug if dl & ul are working correctly.

Thanks Tom.

I’ll play around with different DNS a bit more.

Thanks for your help and your time, Tom!

I ran a few tests and it looks like DNS is simply broken for domain trackerfix.com, all the way back to the authoritative nameservers.

That’s interesting! How did you run the tests? Something with dig, I guess.

My bad. The domain trackerfix.com doesn’t return an IP address but tracker.trackerfix.com does.

And yes, I used dig.
