I could intermittently reproduce your issue with my connected 3 TB USB hdd, placing the TVH recording folder there and forcing the device (/dev/sda) to standby invoking sudo hdparm -y /dev/sda.
But the configuration of “Tvheadend HTSP Client” like shown in the screenshot, fixed it for me:
Especially the second value (default=5) seems to be responsible for the behaviour in my environment.
I changed both to 30 yesterday, but i didnt restart the client, as in disable / enable. Had it before where setting dont update once changed
Tried the standby command you used and then waited a min before playing a recording and that seemed to work, so i`ll try it tomorrow see if its fixed it
