Unnecessary refresh rate change on stop

I’ve noticed that since the March v21.2 update I’m seeing an additional / unnecessary refresh rate change when a video stops playing.

All was fine before, we’d actually watched a movie earlier in that day. I installed the March update later that day and I’m now seeing a rate change, but only when a movie is stopped. Adjust display refresh rate is set to On start/stop and has been for as long as I’ve been using Kodi.

I’ve set the Kodi main menu to 23.976hz as I’m running a projector which takes 6-7 seconds for a refresh rate change. As I mostly watch movies with the Vero, I found this to be a good compromise and doesn’t result in any mode changes when just watching a Blu-ray I’ve ripped.

Display chain is Vero V > Processor > HDFury Vertex > Projector (the Vertex is purely used to switch to a custom memory preset in the projector for HDR content).

I’ve not seen this behaviour on any of the previous releases (I’ve owned a Vero 4K+ since 2021). Any ideas what may be causing it?

I can’t see any unnecessary mode changes in your log. Why do you think it’s happening? Vertex report?

I see the projector display cycling in the same way a mode change is being made (the screen gets slightly brighter for a couple of seconds).

Previously as soon as the credits ended or I hit stop, the main menu would pop up instantly, now there is a delay of 6 or 7 seconds.

I’ve not checked the Vertex yet, I can connect it up to the PC and view the output when stopping / starting - I’ve got the OSD switched off currently, but thinking about it, it doesn’t display during the mode change, just on signal lock. I’ll check (probably tomorrow), and report back.

Yes, a Vertex is rather slow to display after a mode change.

I think this is what I am seeing too on a vero v, and mentioned here

When I press stop or a video ends I get a black screen for 2-3 seconds and it shows the source detail (hdmi) and a resolution (A 1080p)

I remember having some some similar issues with an older vero model where it displayed this info on start and stop of a video. This was controlled via settings > player > adjust display refresh rate > off

But this option I already have off on the vero v

Same here, screen flashing

Turning this feature off won’t give smooth video performance. I’d recommend avoiding that.

thanks @sam_nazarko main reason I have it off is based on your suggestion in an old thread. It was Vero V was displaying those behaviours when I got it, so I applied same.

The playback works perfectly and I have not noticed any smoothness issues with it turned off. With it on. I was getting the on screen notifications when playing video.

But in relation to the current problem, I have it off and it still displays the refresh rate info (I think) when a video ends. This is new happening since March update.

I’ve been looking at this some more earlier tonight.

Checking the the Vertex and the display panel on my processor, both report a momentry loss of singal when stopping a video.

I also had a look at Kodi’s Adjust display refresh rate setting and initially changed it to On Start. No difference at all, still the same loss of signal when hitting stop. I also tried changing to Always and finally Off and oddly no difference in behaviour with either.

No matter what Adjust display refresh rate was set to, I still had the movie start instantly without a refresh rate sync and when stopping there was always a loss of signal for a split second, which triggers a relock and a refresh rate cycle in the projector.

I have seen this happen a few times myself.
My GUI is set to 1080p120 so my TV switches to the videos frame rate when starting it and has to switch back to 120 when it stops.
This has always caused a moment where you see the TV switch and is expected.
But I have had a couple of times recently seen it where when I stop a video the switch takes longer and I think this is odd and then the TV says no signal but then without any intervention it finally comes back up to the GUI,
It’s all pretty quick, maybe a few seconds, but definitely longer than before.
I just assumed CEC was acting up or something.
It’s too random to really get an idea of what’s going on though.
It always catches me off guard.
The fact that you have your GUI set to the same refresh rate as the video would make it even more perplexing.
Could it relate to coming in and out of HDR and the refresh rate isn’t even the culprit?

Interesting.

So far I’ve only tried playing SDR movies, so we can probably rule out HDR being the culprit.

I’ve also not got CEC switched on in the V, so we can probably ignore the usual CEC gremlins too.

I suppose the next question would be, is this now the intended behaviour?
(if so I’ll probably regress to 21.1 over the weekend)

I am seeing something similar. Previous Vero4K didnt do that and when I clicked to Play, it displayed picture almost instantly. And when I stop movie, it returned back to kodi almost instantly.

I just got Vero V, updated it to newest system and when I stop movie, there is like 4 seconds of black screen before it shows Kodi again. Refresh rate adjusting and similar settings are all off, I never used them. My video output is set to 60Hz, but it does it also at 23.976 and 59.94Hz setting. This happens only when stopping movie and returning back to Kodi. When I hit Play, it shows picture quick, like I am used to see.

@sam_nazarko
Any news on if the loss of signal we’re seeing with 21.2 is an intended change moving forward or not?

Sam (creator of Vero) is try to solve it here. I and some other wrote about this there too.

Wondered if there any are thoughts on what’s causing this issue for some users?

I posted that I was experiencing the same thing in the announcement thread.

Thinking it might’ve been a handshake issue as mentioned before, I have tried connecting the Vero V directly to the TV and bypassing the AVR but still experience the black screen after stopping any content.

Patience is a virtue. We know what’s causing it but need a fix which doesn’t break DV playback.
