Somewhere in the latest MagPi, Eben Upton mentioned that pretty soon the RPi3 (and possibly the older models as well) will be able to boot solely from USB and/or PXE (network booting).
USB AND PXE
NETWORK BOOT
Even with the chip designed and
taped out in March of last year, the
Foundation had some final input
for Broadcom in order to add two
new features: direct USB massstorage
and PXE network boot
capabilities. “Gordon rewrote the
boot ROM for the chip and then
provided an updated boot ROM to
Broadcom, saying ‘shove this in
the chip, it’ll work’,” Eben laughs.
“And it does!
I’ve had my fair share of problems with SD cards in the past, and would like to check out PXE or USB installs.
Any plans on implementing this for OSMC?
I know that I am not answering your question but what I can tell you that any quality SD card will be much more reliable than any USB based boot device.
I don’t think there’s any benefit of this for OSMC, and I am considering dropping the USB boot capability

So, SD card corruption should no longer be a threat?
The original infamous SD card corruption issues that the Pi had when first released haven’t been an issue for over 2 years now.
You’re actually more likely to get corruption on a USB install because something like low voltage under load can cause the onboard USB hub to drop out, this causes an unexpected USB disconnect which can lead to file system corruption. The same doesn’t happen with the SD card as it does not run through the USB hub.
Well, guess I’ve had some bad luck with my SD card then.
Will try a new one, I guess
