Use EOS Vero devices (4 and 4+) as full fledge audio players (Bluetooth/airplay etc.)

Hi Guys,

as I have 3 vero4’s hanging around, I was wondering how to extend their life a little
The idea is to have these to use a pure audio-players (I know, overkill, but they have all that is required) to link to some vintage but excellent audio equipment.
My idea is to have a minimal OS on them and add an audio-player software but also bluetooth/wifi airplay type functionality.
What I intend to do, is to have these devices available (at the library, pool, bar) so people can connect their phone to it and launch some music to play. Plain and simple without requiring a display.

So my questions are:

  1. What Is could I use for that? Simple debian? ubuntu?
Any instructions on how to do that in detail?
  2. Which software to use is simplest to use using a android phone?

Thanks for any ideas here.
Cheers

OSMC unless you want to spent quite some time to put an alternative together

That was my first though, but OSMC won’t get more updates on these devices.
Hence the question.

Well if you are happy with the function it provides and you are running it without any open ports exposed to the internet that is not much reason for spending your time to make something else working

Wouldn’t it be a better solution to just purchase dedicated bluetooth receivers? They can be had for very low cost nowadays.

That is true too. But then I can’t start a play-list and shut my phone.
I’ll keep it in mind. Yes.

You know a good one that can be hooked up to power and has good filters ? (Last one I bought I hear the 60Hz of the power supply lines).

Sorry, no. I’ve never used one myself. I’ve just seen various people on YouTube over the years use them to spin up DIY BT speakers, soundbars, and the like.

I personally have a couple old Apple Airport Express’s that use with some self powered speakers in the garage and by the pool. Those sound and work excellent, but as they are airplay only they don’t fit your whole requirement. That, and they have been discontinued for years now.

I’m interested in how this works, as if the Vero 4 is connected to an AVR, won’t it keep triggering the TV on when you start using OSMC remotely?

It will be connected to an plain old HiFi amplifier, no CEC and protocol based limitation crap.
The simpler the better.

So, I decided to go another route.
There are plenty of bluetooth boards hanging around. I can just solder the stuff in.
Something like this: RUIZHI Bluetooth Récepteur Module,Audio MP3 Décodeur DC 5-35V Wireless Conseil Bluetooth Board pour Casque Bricolage Home Stereo : Amazon.fr: High-Tech
Guess that’ll be the easiest and least intrusive in the end. And, it would power on when the device powers up.

Thx for the brainstorming session folks

If you want just audio setup then definitly LMS server, you can setup server in docker on one of the devices.

I already have one running, and raspberryPI’s + Audio addon board for that (3 actually). Which does a very nice job. But that only works for family who has the app installed and configured.

And, TBH, most know how to pair a bluetooth device and use their own apps for that
