I saw the notice for the March update and 19.4
Is the hope that this version update will address the stability issues?
Mine still crashes daily if I don’t reboot it. With reboots being the fix, it makes it extremely hard to provide useful logs.
This version has been released and is now available as a stable update. You should get a prompt shortly, otherwise you can manually check.
My understanding is that the issue is caused by a memory leak in Kodi. I don’t believe there’s been a fix in this area for 19.4, but may be wrong.
For my setup, the crash when scrolling through movies appears to be specifically caused when the setting “Extract Video Information from Files” is enabled. If I disable that setting, I have 0 issues. If I enable that setting, I can repro the issue without fail.
In digging through the kodi forums, there are multiple mentions that if FFMPEG crashes, it takes Kodi out with it. There are ALSO several mentions of FFMPEG crashing when extracting thumbnails or video info.
I am not convinced this is a memory issue, it seems plausible that KODI is using FFMPEG to read video info and it either comes to a file it doesnt like or chokes on files being fed into it at a fast rate and crashes, taking Kodi out as well.
I think it is memory leak related because Kodi seems to behave better on platforms with more RAM apparently
I’m hoping with Kodi v20 we see an upgrade to ffmpeg 5. Work is already in progress.
