Vero 4k+ SMB slowness after reformatting

Hi all,

I’d been using my Vero 4k+ with my Austor NAS with no streaming issues for a couple of months.

A few weeks ago, my NAS got corrupted, with 2/3 of my 4TB array reading as unusable, and a Read Me.txt left about paying crypto to resolve it.

Nothing of value was actually lost, so I moved the remaining data off, formatted, and transfered back over. However, ever since reconnecting the SMB shares, the performance is effectively unusable, with every file buffering to the point of crashing before getting a minute in. Some crash when trying to start playback.

I’ve reinstalled the latest OSMC, confirmed the files work fine from the NAS on other devices and on the backup USB drive. These are mainly .mkv files, mostly under 1GB in size.

Any help would be much appreciated. Happy to share logs if that would help

First upload logs via MyOSMC log uploader and share the URL so that we better understand your setup.
also check your network connectivity with iperf.

Logs have been uploaded to
https://paste.osmc.tv/anobijolij

I’ve been attempting to do an iperf, using the Vero and a Windows machine to test connectivity, but keep getting the same error message:

iperf is allowed through the firewall, Command Prompt is running as Administrator

The fact that you have been attacked by ransomware is very worrying. Are you sure that reformatting your NAS was enough to remove the malicious code from your entire environment?

iperf3: error - unable to send control message: Bad file descriptor

Means, the iperf3 client cannot reach the port 5201 on the specified IP at all.

In your provided logs the Vero has private ipv4 192.168.1.103whereas your Windows system shows private ipv4 172.28.112.1 which is a complete different network. This can only work if your gateway 192.168.1.1 is able to route between these two networks.

Your provided logs are not debug logs. In the following instructions you’ll find the information, how to take the data we expect to see. Thx in advance:

To get a better understanding of the problem you are experiencing we need more information from you. The best way to get this information is for you to upload logs that demonstrate your problem. You can learn more about how to submit a useful support request here.

Depending on the used skin you have to set the settings-level to standard or higher, in summary:

  • enable debug logging at settings->system->logging

  • reboot the OSMC device twice(!)

  • reproduce the issue

  • upload the log set (all configs and logs!) either using the Log Uploader method within the My OSMC menu in the GUI or the ssh method invoking command grab-logs -A

  • publish the provided URL from the log set upload, here

Thanks for your understanding. We hope that we can help you get up and running again shortly.

Not knowing what the ransomware was, I don’t know how to be sure of removing it, short of formatting all devices on the network. But could it still stick around in the router?

Updated debug logs after following provided instructions:

I flushed and renewed ip addresses on the Windows machine, with the IP looking in range and the default gateway matching 192.168.1.1, but I’m still not able to communicate across the devices.

From searching I found the port might be an issue, but changing that didn’t appear to make a difference:

Apologies if I’m missing simple steps, this Vero 4K has Just Worked for a good couple of years

In the logs and pcitures:

  • OSMC device has got ipv4 192.168.1.103
  • Windows PC has got 192.168.1.107

Can you ping the following addresses on Vero

  • your configured gateway 192.168.1.1
  • your PC 192.168.1.107

?
What is the output of

  • traceroute 192.168.1.107

Question: Why you concentrate your investments in the communication between the OSMC device and this PC? Your initial issue was a problem with the OSMC device and the NAS.

I was tied to the Windows machine as it was the environment I was comfortable in and don’t consider the NAS.

This can be marked as resolved. A majority of the issues seem to have stemmed from the powerline adaptors I was using.
Switched over to wifi, and while opening is a little slower than it used to be, performance is back where it was.

Thank you for you assistance and patience
