Vero 5 playback crashes moments to minutes after start (OSMC keeps running)

Hi Sam and team,

My Vero 5 (latest OSMC release, fully updated) keeps crashing during video playback — anywhere from a few moments to a few minutes after starting — when playing from a network share.
OSMC itself keeps running after the crash; only playback stops and drops me back to the Kodi interface.

I have now collected a full set of logs right after a playback crash:
:link: https://paste.osmc.tv/REMOVED

From looking at the logs, I see repeated DRM PRIME / GPU-related errors shortly before playback stops.
This seems to confirm that the problem is in the hardware acceleration / DRM PRIME pipeline rather than the network (no SMB errors are present).

Nothing is wrong with my network or NAS — this setup has been rock solid for years.
DRM PRIME can be disabled, but then playback becomes very choppy and unwatchable.

Would appreciate it if you could take a look and confirm whether this is a known issue or if there’s a patch or nightly build I can test.

Thanks!

Hi,

Looks like an issue with network. Anything changed recently?

Regards Tom.

Well, that’s strange — I don’t have that file on my NAS or in my library.
I’m experiencing these crashes with all video files, but I’ve never even watched this one!
I’ll clean up the library first.
The only change is a new NAS, but I have the same issue with my old NAS which is still connected.
Everything is connected via UTP.

edit, I don’t have any issues when playing from a usb stick, so indeed it must be network related.

I’m going to do a complete reset tomorrow, strange things are happening…

Performed a complete re-install of the Vero5. Moved from SMB to NFS.
So far so good, if I see any issues I’ll report back here

@Tom_Doyle Could you remove/edit the logentry because it contains some private info.

Glad this is now working for you.

Sam

I’m having the exact same issue on both of my Vero V’s. This started right after a recent software update. All of my media is on a Synology NAS and shared via SMB. Seems particularly acute with 4K m2ts and mkv files. My Vero 4k+ plays all media flawlessly from the same SMB source. I do not have the option of moving to NFS.

@rich4 Please, provide a full log set.

I’m having the same issue, seems specific to m2ts files. It was happening on my Vero 4k and I just upgraded to a VeroV and it’s still happening. I’ve tried streaming via both SMB and NFS with same result.

Edit: I’m on August 2025 OSMC release.

We need to see some logs to investigate this.

Let me see what I can do.

Sorry it took so long, but here you go: https://paste.osmc.tv/zelujikuko

When playing the file “[4K][DV] Dolby Chameleon-Atmos.m2ts”, it abruptly stopped part-way through. I’m able to play the same file without issue using Windows PCs and other media players.

On first view this very much looks like an issue with the data transfer between your Vero V and your NAS system. Can you test whether this particular file can be played without problems if you save it to a local file system of the Vero V?

Hi @JimKnopf,

It plays fine on my Vero 5 when I copy it to local storage. I also ran a test playing it from the same network share using my older Vero 4K, and it plays just fine. See logs here: https://paste.osmc.tv/iyiyuqegad

So, both of my Vero 5s fail to play this and other files, but my Vero 4K, Windows PCs, and other streamers are able to handle them without issue.

Maybe something changed in the network, we suggest to check your network with iperf3. Please read this howto

FYI all my devices are connected via Ethernet, no WiFi involved. Here’s the iperf output:

This looks ok! So, at least this is now isolated to the Samba stack between Kodi and your Synology NAS.

What Syno model is it? What DSM version?
On the Syno side the max. SMB protocol is set to SMB3?

I can offer to you to try to reproduce this with a Synology DS223 DSM 7.3.2 if you can provide a link where I can find this Dolby Vision test clip.

Synology DS1821+ running DSM 7.3.2-86009. I discovered that the max SMB protocol had been set to SMB2, but when I changed it to SMB3, the problem went away! I was able to play multiple videos that had been problematic previously.

BTW, here’s a link to the video.
