or do I still have to go through the power off command in the GUI that I used with my old Raspberry Pi OSMC.

Selecting Shut Down is safer. There is also a standby mode.

I imagine you can also use something like RaspController app to login and shut it down from your phone when you want to. I don’t like having to turn the plasma on just to operate an ancillary device either.
Effort is required to make an embedded OS that’s power-off safe, and mixing that with permanent storage of config and files is even harder.

Honestly - I unplug mine all the time. But I have backups…
