Good evening team.
I’ve recently upgraded my 4k to a V and can immediately tell the difference in snappiness and speed.
I am however experiencing a strange issue with the movies library.
On my 4k, the whole library was instantly viewable and scrollable with each poster being correct and displaying as expected. On the V however, it seems to be taking up to a minute for the posters to load if I scroll beyond say, 10 films. To the point that no posters will be showing and it will look like a blank library until I wait a while and they all appear again. Very much slower than the 4k.
Also, then I select ‘update library’ in the options, thinking this might help, I no longer get the progress report in the top right corner, just an apparent freeze until it presumably updates back to how it was.
Any ideas?
If you didn’t move over the thumbs cache folder and DB when you upgraded from the 4K to the V, Kodi has to create a cached thumbnail of every image when you switch to the list of movies (the same is true for TV shows, music, etc). That takes some time, but once it’s done you shouldn’t have to do it again.
Updating the movie library will not make that any better or faster. I’m not sure what skin you’re using, and you’ve provided no debug log, so I can’t help with the issue you described regarding the progress bar in the top right corner (or lack thereof) during the library update.
Thanks for the reply.
I did do the backup restore technique when I upgraded. I’m not sure if that would copy over the cache folder and DB?
It has also been almost a week and the performance is the same. The poster thumbnails are there, they do all show eventually, it just takes a good while to do so if I quickly scroll along the list, say 10-15 films. If I do it very slowly, they all show. Makes me think it has the files, just seems to be very slow in showing them.
Was the 4K also on Kodi v21?
Hiya Sam, good to talk again and thank you for responding.
Yes the 4k was on v21. Strangely enough, the V was on an older OS than the 4k took a little while to figure out why the backup file wasn’t working. But after I’d updated it, the backup file transferred without a hiccup.
That’s expected. I need to update the factory image to v21.
What you could do is stop Kodi on both devices and just copy the entire .kodi directory over. That will mean nothing is missed.
Is that possible to do through the Vero GUI? And how would I go about it?
For reference, I only use the Vero through the TV so have no experience accessing any files on it from my pc.
I see. Unfortunately it’s not trivial to do it through the UI. But to ensure that restoring the backup before Kodi was updated, you could do a factory reset in My OSMC and try and restore the backup again.
Understood.
Forgive me if I’m not getting the full picture, but previous to updating the V, the backup/restore was failing. It wouldn’t allow me to upload the settings.
Once I had updated, it uploaded straight away. Therefore would that not suggest that it would have uploaded correctly?
Just being curious.
Its an idea worth trying.
Yes but that might’ve partially restored things. I’d start fresh.
Cheers
Sam
I’ll get on it today! Will report back.
Thanks Sam, as always.
Hiya Sam.
So… I factory reset the V. Plugged my 4k back in, took another backup copy from it, used the file to restore to the V. This time it happened immediately with no issues.
After populating all of my media, I even left it for a bit to see if it stabilised but the issue is still there.
My movies folder will show the thumbnails on the poster wall but only after it’s been left for a few seconds, it’s not immediate. And if I scroll along more than 10ish films, all the thumbnails disappear and it needs to be left for a few seconds again for them to come back. Certainly not instantly like the 4k was.
My settings weren’t crazy complicated so I’m going to try factory resetting the V and manually settings it up rather than using the restore, just to eliminate a corrupt file/dodgy SD card.
I’ll let you know how I get on.
Well that was quicker than I thought.
The problem still persists even with a complete start from scratch.
But, only if I switch to the Estuary skin. If I keep the OSMC skin, it’s lightning fast, everything works as it should. The moment I switch to Estuary, there’s a huge lag on the movie library thumbnails.
If I then go back to OSMC skin, no thumbnails but after a quick update library, they’re back within seconds. And scrolling fast again.
Return to Estuary, the problem returns.
Hmm. I wonder if this might be a regression in Kodi v21 with Estuary. We are already aware of a couple of issues here.
You could try a Kodi v20 image (as a test) but that might be a bit inconvenient for you
Hiya Sam, apologies for the late response.
I’m more than happy to do some testing for the bigger OSMC cause if it’d help?!
But I’m also quite happy using the OSMC skin so I’m not particularly affected by the issue now.
Up to you.
Haven’t had another report of this. I wonder if something is up with your library. I appreciate the offer but no need for now. Will keep an eye out for other reports
