Vero V upgrade from Raspberry Pi

Hi. I’m running OSMC on a Pi 3 and looking at a well-overdue upgrade to 4K. So considering Pi 5 or the Vero V. I see that functionally the Vero does everything a Pi does and more and better, but I’m concerned that it has been made a “Consumer product” rather than a project and I won’t be able to dabble with it so much (Vero may say “break it”). Is this a concern or can I do everything I can with a Pi? If the answer is “Yes, it does everything but better” then no need to read on. Otherwise, my specific concerns are:

  • My library is on NAS with a mySQL database. Can I still edit the kodi config files (eg advancedsettings.xml) using SSH from my laptop?
  • Can I use my Kodi Remote on phone or iPad? For music I don’t have the TV on (just Pi and Amp) so cannot use the on-screen UI and use the phone Remote App instead. Its far easier even with the TV on! The App requires a static IP for the Pi (or else have to keep adding a new Host). Which is the next question…
  • Can I configure the network settings to have a static IP? I do this on my Pi as part of the SD Card installation process, but on a Vero it will be pre-installed so that opportunity is lost. Not aware if it is changeable thereafter.
  • Can you change Skins? And use Add-ons? My favourite Artists Slideshow add-on requires it to be enabled in the skin (and the default OSMC skin does not).
    Thanks in advance!

The answer is Yes, but I still continued to read

Yes you have full root access and can change any file you like

Yes you can flip between static and dhcp as much as you like. You can also tether between ethernet and wifi if needed

Yes

You have full root access to the system if you wish.

Great to know thanks. And also thanks for making it this way and not treating us like idiots!

I have, up to now, bought every vero version that is out there  Could fill a little Museum with it.
Reason I do, is that Sam & Team are providing awesome support. The Devices do what they are meant to do extremely well. And I have access to the devices root! so I can troubleshoot the setup from the other side of the planet when on the move and my kids/wife want to watch something and it does not run (which, in the last years, didn’t happen)!
