Where does OSMC/KODI get the name/title of a file from?

Lets say you go to video/files/local directory and you get a listing of the names of the files in that directory. From where does OSMC/KODI get the title of that file from? From the file name like my_video.mp4 or using exiftool one of the meta tags of that file such as “file name” or “Title”. Again using exiftool I can change, or add, either one of these fields yet OSMC does not seem to recognize that change. What am I missing here?

I believe the files view uses either the filename or - if the source is scraped into the library - the library title (unless that option is disabled in settings).
