1080P 25/50 fps plays jerky Vero V

I am currently watching the series “Fool me once” and it plays jerky, as if it skips a frame or whatever it is. It plays smooth on my LG TV through the Plex app, so it has to be either Kodi or OSMC or the combination.
I played the file directly from storage on the Vero V to take away any other influences and it shows like that as well, so it isn’t an add-on issue either.
The TV shows that it is receiving 1080p/50Hz

I also downloaded a different version of it, Ethel’s, and it has the same “issue”. It does the same thing on my LG TV when I connect the Vero V to that. So it isn’t the TV mode or anything.

If you need a snippet of the file, how can I best do so?

I’m not an OSMC person, just another end-user, but I can make a suggestion about that: you could try using WeTransfer.com for files up to 2GB.

Out of curiosity, if you whitelist all available resolutions and then, during playback, manually switch the output mode to 1080p/25Hz (instead of 1080p/50Hz) does it then play smoothly?

Thanks for the effort you put into that guide! It did solve my issue indeed.

But now I am wondering, why didn’t it work in the first place? Probably more a question towards Sam.
1080p25Hz isn’t that strange of a resolution to not put it out as is, or is it?

What I had to do on top of the whitelisting, is disable the “Allow double refresh rates” setting, as you described in your guide onder the point 20 and towards Pi users. When I left that setting to “on”, I still had the jerky display and my TV showed it as 1080p50Hz, after disabling it (which makes sens of course, but just trying to be thorough in my information), it showed as 1080p25Hz and played smooth again.

@sam_nazarko Is this a bug, intended or something else?

Disabling the “Allow double refresh rates” option, as of right now, will cause problems if you watch 1080i/50 material (as opposed to 1080p/25). If you never watch 1080i stuff then disabling that option is fine; but if you do then I suggest keeping it enabled and manually switching to 1080p/25Hz output during playback.

All this stuff has been the cause of considerable discussion between me and @grahamh in the past, and he has said once or twice that he intends to eventually change the whitelist logic so that videos like yours default to 1080p/25Hz; but there always seems to be something more urgent to work on.

So, the issue is that there is no perfect solution around all the formats that can be fed/put out to the TV. Too bad, I would think it shouldn’t be too hard to put a script behind this.

You gave them the info that will work for 99% of the people. Though I get that there is a backlog and this is probably an issue that doesn’t happen too often, but if it does, the best way to solve it is to inquire about it for 99% of the people too, as this isn’t a clear issue/solution to get to on one’s own merits.

But glad I got it sorted and am watching this pretty interesting show smoothly now :wink:

Unfortunately, it is hard. It would be wrong to think this is solvable with a simple whitelist algo change. The problem is there are many different types of ‘interlacing’ and lots of video that lies about whether it is ‘interlaced’ or truly progressive. The situation is also different depending on the codec of the video. It’s therefore very hard/impossible to find out from the first few frames what would be the best framerate to play at. You probably know already that Kodi doesn’t rely on the stream header to set up the video but uses ffmpeg to read some frames and make a guess how best to play it.

But other media players manage this, don’t they? Yes but that’s probably with a lot more power in their GPU so they don’t have to pick the ideal framerate and can manage smooth playback with a setup that’s sub-optimal.

The problem is also closely tied up with the recent work that’s gone into getting Kodi and the AMLogic kernel working better together to avoid lipsync issues and stuttering from other causes. The team hasn’t been sitting on its hands.

We may eventually find the silver bullet. Meanwhile, selecting the best refreshrate manually provides a solution.

Figuring out why the box can’t output a 25fps video at 50Hz by simply showing each frame twice would be the perfect solution. :slight_smile:

Yeah, as a user you always think things are easy to fix, while in reality it couldn’t be more difficult.

Glad I got a solution, but as angry.sardine brought up, isn’t it fixable in this instance? It seems the doubling is not working as intended.
Or is that an issue caused by the limitations of the GPU/CPU as well?

It’s a matter of communication between Kodi and the kernel so that they run in lockstep. They seem to have different ideas about what is a field and what is a frame. If you really want to know the detail, @tanio99 is your man.

Interlaced playback is that kind of things that I will never really understand :frowning: . What I’ve experienced while I was working on the AV sync issue is, that some clips that say they’re 1080p25 have also interlaced flags set that are also shown by tools like mediainfo. And, to make things worse, even if the container metadata says that it’s progressive, the data stored in the frames say they’re interlaced.

What those clips have in common is, that they play fine at 50 fps and jerky at 25 fps. But in your case here it seems the other way round?

Can you provide me a short clip (about 1 min) that can be used to reproduce that issue?

It isn’t an interlaced video by the way, it is a progressive video. 1080p25 shouldn’t be interlaced as far as I know, as the p stands for progressive, but might be doing too many assumptions here.

That’s what mediainfo says, but it also says Original framerate 50, suggesting it started out as interlaced and has been mangled somehow. Please make sure you clip without messing with the metadata.

On Vero or any other linux system

dd count=80k if=Fool.Me.Once.S01E03.1080p.WEB.H264-SuccessfulCrab.mkv of=FoolMeClip.mkv

will make a clip 40MB which should be about 1 minute if I’ve got the maths right.

With mkv’s you can use MKVToolNix GUI. You can drag a file into it and click in the output tab and use the splitting options to chop it into parts based on size or timestamps. It is a handy tool to have around generally to make tweaks to video files.
