Buffering issues playing UHD Movies

Purchased Vero 4k+ in November of 2018 for the purpose of playing blu-ray and UHD rips. Have had an issue since the beginning with intermittent issues of buffering only when playing UHD titles. I have tried a great deal of troubleshooting, and after each troubleshooting session, it seems to go away for a while, and I think I’ve conquered it, only to have it return again sometime in the future.

All my rips are done from original media using MakeMKV. I do not touch the files afterwards.

When this happens, I will be playing the movie, when it starts stuttering for a few seconds, then the buffering pop-up comes up, then the movie freezes completely. Occasionally, if I leave it sit long enough, it will restart and be fine in a few seconds. Usually though, it will never recover. I can SSH in and the box is still responsive, so it’s just the movie that locks up. I can stop the movie and Kodi will respond to all menus/views as normal. If I start a blu-ray, it will be fine. If I restart the same UHD, or another UHD, I will have buffering issues fairly quickly (if it even does more that play a couple of frames).

A reboot of the Vero will solve it for a time. But it always comes back eventually.

My Vero is plugged into a direct Cat5e connection to a Cisco SG200 Gigabit switch in my office. My Synology DS1512+ is plugged into the same switch.

I have been running other skins on the Vero, but a while ago moved back to the default OSMC skin. I have removed the other skins, but some remnants still might remain. The only real plugin I run on it is PlexKodiConnect (version 2.11.7). OSMC is running the March update.

My shares from the Synology are SMB v1 shares (yes, I need to move to V2 or V3 at some point) for compatibility with Plex and Windows pc’s. I have one other person that can stream remotely through Plex, but this usually happens with no other streams being played.

I have run iperf and figures attached below. I will rerun when this occurs next for comparison. I will also grab logs when this happens next. Current logs and iperf below:

Logs: https://paste.osmc.tv/isujukotat

This happened again last night playing both Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One (if it shows up). I finally gave up and watched Rogue One through Plex on my Shield (worked perfectly).

Any ideas? I will be playing more tonight, so will be uploading more current info if it happens again.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tom,

I don’t think the files themselves will be the issue if you’ve used MakeMKV to produce them.

It looks like you have a network throughput problem. While your iperf3 test looks good in the reverse direction, it doesn’t look so good in the opposite direction. I would look at resolving that and suspect that once you do, your playback issues will disappear.

As you’re familiar with SSH, you could mitigate these issues (albeit this is not ideal) with autofs mounts. See File sharing with a NAS, media server, windows share or other device. If you are still able to log in to the box when you have issues, then this suggests that Kodi’s internal SMB connection has died. This can cause Kodi to freeze.

You can confirm if this is the case by seeing if systemctl restart mediacenter brings Kodi up again.

Sam

Thanks for the reply, Sam.

I did notice the other set of numbers being about half the other, and am a bit puzzled. That was without the -R, so what exactly is being tested there? First time using iperf, though I have used other network troubleshooting tools. Those numbers show up with just the switch, Synology, and Vero connected to each other. Not much to eliminate there, but I will do so later next week. Don’t want to disrupt my Synology as I need it for Work From Home for a couple more days.

Not sure if I can use autofs mounts with PlexKodiConnect and keep all my media managed through my Plex server like I do now. I’ll try to look into that.

When this happens, I can stop the movie, browse all my libraries, and even start a blu-ray just fine, so I don’t think that anything Kodi wise has stopped or hung. Logs directly after when this happens next should shed more light. Anything more than just the iperf logs and grab-logs -A when it happens again?

Yes – please upload Kodi debug logs and see if restarting Kodi resolves the issue.

Another thing that could be possibly involved is intermittent failing of finding Plex on the local network, or it not picking up the authentication which will make the stream loop back over the internet. How do you have PKC configured? Is it using the same method os the official add-on or are you using the option that drops in local links to the library instead?

As long as your playing direct this shouldn’t be an issue if you set it up with path substitution. If you look at your log you will see when you are direct playing it opens the same as any other Kodi file. Path substitution in Kodi modifies any path when it gets a match. Therefore you just need to setup a system mount (autofs or fstab probably makes little difference) and check what path is being opened and manipulate it accordingly.

Are you using link aggregation beween the switch and Synology?

I have PKC configured using Direct Paths. As I understand it, that syncs the Kodi database from the Plex database, and the playing of the title is direct from the NAS to Kodi? It only uses the Plex authorization to access the DB to sync it? If I’m wrong, please let me know. I will, however, next movie I’m playing see if Plex reports the playing in the Dashboard and see if it’s Direct Play.

After looking at the autofs guide, I see that it should be possible. I’ll figure it out over the next couple of days and make those changes.

I was, but suspected that that may have something to do with my issues and disabled it a couple of months ago. It still persists, so I don’t think that’s my issue. Thanks for thinking of it though!

If you remembered to disable link aggregation on the switch and on the NAS, and the NAS is now only connected by a single cable, I’d recommend that you try replacing the cable.

Sorry I did not word my post very well. I only played with PKC a short while and I don’t have it currently installed anywhere to look for the exact terms but what I meant was that it can be configured either as the Kodi database storing links to Plex, or links directly to your local storage. The former can have the authentication issue and loop back over the internet, the latter cannot. I think you can actually just bring up the information window on a movie, highlight the refresh button, and you should probably see a file path. That path should tell you which way it is configured.

Lots more info tonight. I tried to play a rip of the new Akira 4K import from Japan (can run MediaInfo if needed), and it froze the movie almost immediately, displayed the Buffering popup, and the progress bar never moved on the Buffering popup. I SSH’ed in and triggered logs:

https://paste.osmc.tv/ejufefalan

Then remembered you asked for Kodi debugging turned on, so stopped the movie, turned debugging on, restarted the movie, had it freeze and Buffer, then grabbed logs again:

https://paste.osmc.tv/kukamumuca

I tried a systemctl restart mediacenter after stopping the movie, like you asked, and it did restart Kodi, but as soon as I tried to enter one of my libraries to try testing the movie again, it just displayed the OSMC waiting animation, and never recovered (waited 15 min, then finally restarted box).

Before I restarted the box, however, I ran some more iperf numbers. Got very interesting results:

Much better numbers.

With all these tests the only commonality on the poor opposite numbers is the Vero itself. I have eliminated everything else. Not sure if it’s hardware or software.

As to the PlexKodiConnect config, everything is setup to DirectPath, so it should be playing everything directly. Never got a chance to bring up the info screen or Plex Dashboard. I’ll try that if I get another movie running tonight.

Where do we go from here? Thanks again!

When did you purchased the Vero?

Was that client on the Vero and Server on Synology or the other way around?

Also did you replaced the network cable as suggested by @dillthedog?

November 2018

Client on Vero, server on Synology.

Not yet. Can’t do too much on the Synology until tomorrow. However, with the PC to Synology tests looking good, I doubt it’s the cable. However, easy to change and recheck. Like I said I’ll do it tomorrow.

Thanks for the help.

I’ve not tried this myself but this tells me that it should work as the credentials were inserted in this path using the same method as putting a path sub in advancedsettings…

CSMBFile::Open - opened smb://USERNAME:PASSWORD@ds1512/UHD Media/Movies/Akira (1988)/AKIRA_t01.mkv

So if you sub from “smb://ds1512/UHD Media/” to “/mnt/mountname/” I don’t see any reason why that wouldn’t work.

Ok, it might be one of the few faulty devices that had issues in the receiving direction.
Can you provide your order number than @sam_nazarko can check if it might be the case.

Order #21044

Shouldn’t be if it is from Nov 18. We had resolved the issue by then.

Have you tried another Ethernet cable?

Sam

Sam,

I have put in a new cable between the Synology and the switch. I also swapped out the switch in my office with another one just to eliminate that as well.

These are the iperf numbers I get with the new switch and cable:

Still excellent numbers.

As a last test, I unplugged the network connection from the Vero and plugged in into a Windows laptop and ran iperf from there:

Much better numbers. I don’t know what more I can do to narrow down the cause of the poor (non -R) numbers to the Vero. It just has to be the Vero. I can try switching over the Vero to wifi to see what numbers I get there. I have an AP just a few feet away from the Vero.

I will also try next to configure the autofs setup and try that. It may help the overall config, but I don’t think it’ll have any effect on those iperf numbers, correct? They don’t use the mounts, but a direct connection?

Thanks.

Correct. Iperf only tests the raw connection speed. System mounts have proven helpful in cases even when their iperf numbers are less than perfect.

I agree much better numbers but that drop to <800Mbit for some second is still quite strange.
The Vero numbers with >400MBit (if they are sustainable over longer time) should be fine in combination with autofs.
