Can i do this

Hi all, Can you tell me if i can do this ?

I wanna link my pc to an external HD which is also plugged in to the Vero 4K.
I wanna make it so i dont have to keep taking the HD to the vero 4K to play a movie off the HD which was put there by the PC.
Well aware i can do this many ways ie: The router.(although its got no usb port)

But forget the router for now, Can i do this with just USB ?

Not with just cables. USB does not work like that. I’m sure you can find a cable that will physically allow you to do that, and if you’re lucky it “just” won’t work. If you’re unlucky it won’t work AND you will fry the USB ports on one or all of the devices.

You could try a USB switch. Here’s a bunch from Amazon. I do not endorse any of them, nor can I speak to their quality.

You will have to make sure to dismount the USB drive from whichever device is using it before you switch it. You can’t have both attached at the same time. If you don’t consistently dismount the USB drive, at some point you will corrupt it. You will also need to make sure the USB drive has a filesystem on it that both the Vero and your PC understand.

Also, unless your PC and Vero are pretty close to each other, you’ll have to risk a very long, out of spec, USB cable. Again, you can buy them, but some work better than others, and some are only for charging.

Honestly, if your router has the ability to act as a NAS (and it may or may not even if it does have a USB port), you’re better off figuring that out. The path your headed down leads mostly to madness.

You can lock this post now Admin. pkscout Seen to that.
Nail on the head job.
Thankyou

Or you could just connect it to the Vero and use the Vero as a NAS

That’s what I do. The Vero ‘owns’ the hard drive and the PC can still upload to this because the Vero has SMB server installed.

Looks like i need to go NAS looking at the comments here.
Sorry for sounding like i am blank (But i am when it comes to this pc stuff)
So is this SMB server already on my vero 4K ?

You might take a browse around the forum where I’m sure you will find this topic covered quite a few times. Here is just one such post that looks like it covers it…

You would need to install the Samba/SMB Server from the OSMC app store.
As @darwindesign wrote due to the 100 MBit Network Interface the Vero 4k is not the most ideal NAS but it still does the job.

Check this article

So i tried tonight to grab the Samba (smb) server from the app store on the vero 4K.
I selected it clicked on install.
It says “downloading” for around 3 secs then say “error installing, please report this on the OSMC Forum”
Then when i go on the next screen it says “operations succesfully completed”

Share logs via My OSMC → Log Uploader

Try to connect to the Vero from your PC and see if it works.
