Yes – and we’ve also found that some displays don’t do what we expected with this data; so we will add some logic to deliver the best experience possible for individual displays after the 4.9 release.
I agree and wrote about in my Tone Mapping post over on the Kodi forum that certainly appears to be the case:

What was really surprising is the picture output results my Apple TV 4K and Panasonic OLED produced on the 10,000 nits S&M clips considering the ATV 4K does not do MaxCLL/FALL HDR metadata passthrough.
Seems Panasonic do some detailed image analysis, where as LG definitely need correct MaxCLL/FALL HDR metadata.
Will there be any significant changes with HDR to SDR conversion / tone mapping? I have a few UHD rips that are mastered at 4,000 nits (eg. The Meg) which is a challenge for HDR to SDR conversion. Outdoor scenes are completely blown out and most detail is lost and adjusting brightness / contrast to where I can bring back details on these scenes renders the rest of the scenes too dark.
For titles like this I currently need to use my Panasonic UB420 with the HDR Optimizer enabled.
Yes - there are a number of changes

Hi,
When could be the public testing release?
Thanks in advance.
Probably in a few days
Sam
Count me in, I have 4K+.
I love OSMC. Thanks for your hard work
Please, could you add me to this testing ? Thanks!
Done.
Could you pm me how to enter on testing thread? I can’t found it. Thanks
It is a PM.
I’m happy to test. I have a Vero 4K, and a bunch of Vero 4K+'s, and have different 4K TVs.
Can I be added to the early testers list please?
Thanks
Done.
Pls. add me. Using Vero 4k. Mostly interested in 3D, but also Reinhard (if thats in the builds). Do not know what other new features i could be excited in.
Btw: Are there pins for serial port and would it make sense to solder those up / connect them to get better kernel/boot diag, in case that might be needed ?
Is there a list of things to test for 4.9?
I’m interested in HDR tone mapping testing if it’s in the 4.9 release.
I’d be interested in testing as well. I have 150 UHD titles ripped and stored to attached HDDs and would like to test the HDR to SDR conversion of titles mastered at 1000 and 4000 nits.
Sam said in another thread that tone mapping is coming but kernel 4.9 has the highest priority right now.
Could I be added to the test?
Done.
