Issue with DTS-HD and Vero4K

I wouldn’t go down this path… If there’s no proof that it’s clearly a Denon related issue, it doesn’t help anybody to suggest this. I’m using a brand new Denon receiver and there are no problems with any source device or any audio format. :wink:

First question: Is DTS-HD MA passthrough working with a standalone Blu-ray player, @LED123? If that’s a yes, then there has to be something going on with the Vero (whatever it might be)…

@Chillbo: You’re right. This fingerpointing is of no use to get a fast solution.

@LED123: Does it make any change if you reactivate the settings “Keep audio device” + “Send low volume noise” which are the defaults?

@Chillbo
I’ll try later today to replace the vero with an old intel nuc running kodi 17, without changing anything else (either cabling or settings). If DTS-HD is fine then yes, there is something wrong with the vero. I think it’s a better test compared to a standalone BR player.

@JimKnopf
Cannot reactivate now, I’ll try it later, but if i remember correctly i had the default settings and changed them when i noticed the issue

Did it work on the old AVR?

as i said in previous post, the old AVR was connected with an optical spdif from TV.
So no DTS-HD was possible. I had both HD DTS/Dolby deactivated in kodi pass through.
That was the main reason i decided to get a newer AVR model.

Just to be sure: Isn’t the “Channel Layout: RAW,…” an indication of pass-through was used?

Yep, do that. And also try switching HDMI cables just to cancle out peripherals… It might not solve it, but just to have the basic sources of error out of the game.
A standalone player would just show you whether the receiver is showing any problems with DTS-HD MA in general :wink:

I just replaced the vero4K with a 3 years old intel nuc running Kodi 17.
I didn’t touch any setting to the AVR, or TV, or change any cable.
The result is that every single sound format is playing perfectly!!!
There is no problem with the new Denon AVR.
Conclusion: The issue is 100% on the Vero4K, whatever problem that might be.
@sam_nazarko
I really need help here to solve it, can’t do anything else on my own.

Thanks for letting us know.
Did you play the same file? Can you send me a 15 second sample of it so I can test here?

Did you use the same HDMI cable and exact same AV pathway for the PC?

Sam

I played the same file plus at least 10 more.
None of them had any issue.

Yes I can but is it necessary? It’s not one file that has issues,
all (10+) of files that tested had problems at the Vero and none at the nuc.

I’ve checked your logs again in more detail.

Kodi detects the DTS-HD stream and activates passthrough. The kernel also shows that Vero 4K is sending a DTS-HD stream to the receiver.

I do not know why the receiver is not picking that up.
If you change the source on the AVR during playback and switch it back, do you hear anything?

Yes, I tried this several times, a couple of times fixed the sound but not all the times.
Also after pause and then start the movie sometimes fixes the sound.

If switching source from one to another without touching playback on the Vero 4K brings back sound, then this would sugges a problem with the AVR. The Vero 4K will keep sending the signal when you switch away from the source. If it wasn’t sending it then it would not work at all.

That’s not to say we can’t work around it. I’m just trying to understand the problem.

I have already said that the sound sometimes starts playing,
but this a rare case.
Problem with the Vero is that the sound has issues 99% of times and
at the old nuc the sound has 0% issues.
All settings, cables, paths, etc are the same. Only do device change.

I understand that. I will search and see if I can find out more information regarding this receiver. This problem also seems to occur with some Blu-ray disc players as well.

If you’re willing to do some testing, let me know.

Sam

Although not identical it does sound similar to my random issue from a few weeks ago.

Please try @JimKnopf suggestion of “Keep Audio Alive” as that fixed it for me.
FYI I did not use “Send Low Noise” as it seemed to cause a feedback sound from my rear speakers but YMMV.

Yes, I can do some testing, but I have to tell that my linux knowledge is not good at all.

Just another idea if you do not use a single remote control to control all devices in your environment via HDMI:
Deactivate all CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) features on all devices.

  • for the Vero you find it at Settings -> System -> Input -> Peripherals and disable the CEC-adapter
  • on the Denon AVR find something like HDMI Control and set it to OFF (manual ?)
  • on your TV look also for something similar and deactivate it (manual ?)

Just tried it, no change…

I use a logitech for remote, so all cec are closed from day one.
