It’s a real shame that OSMC suddenly doesn’t work with my hardware. Oh well, so long OSMC, it was fun while it lasted!
The problem is that Realtek is not supplying drivers for linux. Their drivers are very old and poorly supported. Complain to Realtek about this. (but from what I understand complaints to them are basically ignored)
You can always stay on an older version.
Unfortunately you will likely see support for these adapters disappear from other distributions as the kernels are updated.
Sam
Hi, I can now understand the rationale for dropping Realtek based on this information but I am still unclear if the Mediatek MT7601U is OSMC supported?
I have ordered this as the replacement for my Realtek but the issues experienced by user Jonathan_Szoke cause me to wonder. Or this a separate problem clouding the issue?
Thanks.
MT7601U is working for me with the latest update.
Can you please send me a link to the working MT7601U wifi dongle?
Thx
Well I don’t have a link as I just bought them on the street but this is the identifier
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 148f:7601 Ralink Technology, Corp. MT7601U Wireless Adapter
So if yours is not working it is either a missing ID or a firmware issue. dmesg
output would help to determine.
Strange, my identifier looks same/similar to yours:
osmc@osmc:~$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 083: ID 148f:7601 Ralink Technology, Corp. MT7601U Wireless Adapter
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0a12:0001 Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd Bluetooth Dongle (HCI mode)

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Have you tried your dongle in another device?
What chipset did the official OSMC store ‘N’ adapter have?
From another thread
The official OSMC store adapter is 802.11ac cbased.
So, it works fine on a windows 10 machine, but on my pi it’s complicated
On a squeaky clean 01 Nov image I get:

How are you powering the Pi?
Official 2.5 amp or 3amp depending on testing location. I remove all other USB devices when testing.
I’ll try another fresh batch of installs again today on a different sd card in case that makes any difference.
If you have a powered USB hub available, try using that. It could be that your power supply has degraded over time.
Hi, I just checked the wayback machine to ensure I haven’t gone completely crazy and there it was in the Store with the description " 802.11n (2.4Ghz) WiFi dongle" - this is the one I am querying about?
Fresh and updated buster lite on different SD card:
