OSMC File Server

Hi there,

Complete noob to this forum and OSMC…

I have connected a 5TB ext4 HDD (via USB) to my Pi and want to use this as a file server to a couple of Windows PCs (Win 7).
So far I have:

• downloaded and installed the samba file server on OSMC
• edited the fstab file (server HDD kept automatically going to sleep)

I can:

• access files on the HDD from the Windows PCs
• drag and drop files to the HDD from Windows PCs
• drag and drop files from the Server HDD to Windows
• play content from the HDD on Pi

I cannot:

• play content that is stored on the Server HDD on either Windows machine (the content attempts to play then chucks an unhelpful error message in VLC, Audacity and Windows Media Player).
• open files (word, text) that are stored on the Server HDD on either Windows machine.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Samba crashes while trying to play video files in VLC on Windows 10

Hey, I have installed OSMC on a raspberry PI 3. I have then installed Samba from the store. I haven’t changed the configuration of samba (except add a logging). I have a USB HDD installed and renning well. I would like to play the files of my HDD on a windows 10 device connected through local wifi. I can navigated through windows explorer, I even can copy/modify files, but when I try to play a file, VLC shows me an error: “bad file descriptor” and do not open the file. New issue.

Now when I try to drag content from the Storage HDD on my Windows host to my new Kodi Server drive (USB connected) I get permissions error messages?

How do I set the file permissions on that drive to read, write and execute for all users on the n/w?
