OSMC's June update is here with Kodi v20 - OSMC

Thanks for that, its mostly the same, but it can’t hurt to give it a go

It appears as if Kodi v20 has a problem with subtitle, srt files associated with mp4 files? When I attempt to browse for a subtitle file and select the file the system crashes (sad face). The problem is repeatable for me and just started after v20 upgrade. A snippet from the kodi.log (line 3 has me starting the mp4 video, line 41 shows the 3_English.srt file chosen, the last line is the end of the kodi.log before the box shuts down). Subtitles embedded into mkv files work fine. Am I doing something wrong?

Not that I have seen. Is this happening on more than one movie? Have you tried to open that srt file in a text editor to see if it is damaged or downloaded a different copy and see if that had the same issue?

@darwindesign Every film I have that has an mp4 file with an srt file in the same folder, when I use the subtitle menu to select the srt file the server crashes.

Then I would suggest to start a new thread in which you posted full debug logs after rebooting twice and then reproducing the issue. I noticed in your snippet that for some reason Kodi can’t open the temp folder. I’m not sure if that is related but you might want to try via ssh

systemctl stop mediacenter
rm -r ~/.kodi/temp
systemctl start mediacenter

On a side note if you renamed that sub file you wouldn’t be having to manually browse for it in the first place. It just needs to be exactly the same as the video file and can optionally have an extra language code and forced flag (movie.name.mp4 and movie.name.eng.forced.srt).

@darwindesign - When I attempt to browse for a subtitle file and select the file the system crashes (sad face). The problem is repeatable for me and just started after v20 upgrade. I attempted to:

systemctl stop mediacenter
rm -r ~/.kodi/temp
systemctl start mediacenter

This did not help. I also attempted to rename my subtitle file from English.srt to the name of the movie.name.eng.forced.srt. Now playing the film crashes the box before I even attempt to select the subtitle file. I sent sam the kodi.old.log file in a support ticket ( #825306). This issue appears to be repeatable with any mp4 file with an srt file for its subtitle. I am not having this problem with mkv files that have subtitiles built into the mkv file.

I really don’t have a clue as to why you’re experiencing this but I’m pretty sure this is specific to something in your setup and not general issue with the newest OSMC build. Nobody else has reported similar behavior and I grabbed the same file your playing and played it using smb paths like you are and didn’t find an issue on a Vero or RPi. Therefore without full logs and a new thread there isn’t aa lot to offer you to help with your issue. I also highly doubt your going to get much from a support ticket with only a Kodi log by itself either. Perhaps you should consider a clean install.

I also see alot of playback issues with streams. It often starts ok, but after some time I start seeing lag and the ActiveAE - large audio sync error coming in my logs. Restarting mediacenter solves the issue (not stopping and starting the stream again).
I had no issues before on Matrix. I also notice that changing volume (showing some ui on top of the video) suddenly makes the video lag shortly?!?

Issue with inputstream.adaptive or graphics stack in build for RPi?
Running on RPi3

The log you posted shows hardware acceleration turned off. That isn’t how it is configured with default settings and would lead to playback issues with more complex files.

Yep I was playing about with the settings and must have left it off.

To be fair, since I replaced my config.txt with the one above it’s actually been fine, no freezing issues so far, but I do still see the same errors, so am just keeping an eye on things

I have updated my raspberry pi 3B to the latest version of OSMC (Kodi 20 2023-6-1) and since the update I have started to notice a memory usage problem. After watching streaming content for several hours through tvheadend the memory used increases to 600MB when the streaming starts to stall and jerk.
I have tried a fresh install and the behavior is the same.

Checking the used memory in linux. Kodi.bin is using only 15% of system memory and there is no other process using this memory. It is also not used by caches or tmpfs drives. The memory simply shows as used.

I only have the fresh install and the tvheadend client addon.

I have installed the previous version Kodi(19 2023-05-1) of OSMC and the problem disappears.

I have the same issues with audio becoming laggy after some time (PVR, IPTV Simple Client), but on Vero 4K.

I might have the same issue as you
Being having some issues since I upgraded to the June update a few days ago
I use tvheadend client too
I didn’t check memory usage per se though. All I’m seeing is we are using pretty much the same sofware / hardware

I get image freezing every few hours. Nothing I can do except rebooting. And then everything works the same again
I did check the logs a little. But I don’t know what to look for (there are quite a few ‘errors’ but they’re not necessarily meaningful…)

In any case, I’d like to know if it’s possible to downgrade from the June to the May version ?
I still want to make sure if it’s a software or hardware problem

Thanks !

You can’t downgrade but you can do a fresh install of an earlier version. Images are available via the download link at the top of this site and the install allows for you to choose which image you want to write.

Great update, thanks! everything works fine after update!
any clue about the specifications of the new “vero4k+++”?? ETA??

There is no specific ETA yet and until it is ready for sale some of the specifics are being withheld. There is two threads where you can find what has been revealed with the main one being…

Raspberry PI 3B+ here.

The screensaver (a simple image slideshow) hangs after a few hours. Kodi it not responsible. Killing Kodi with “kill” shows the sad face (expected), but it doesn’t show kodi main screen when kodi reloads. Kodi seems to be running but the screen still shows the sad face.

The only way out is rebooting the Raspberry PI.

Checking “dmesg”, I see this line every second:

[...]
[197730.568018] [drm] Resetting GPU.
[197731.608088] [drm] Resetting GPU.
[197732.568102] [drm] Resetting GPU.

[197734.568123] [drm] Resetting GPU.
[197735.608173] [drm] Resetting GPU.

This is happening since upgrading to 2023.06. I was very happy with KODI 19.5, until that update.

Thanks.

I got several OSMC updates since 2023.06-1, like 2-3 already, but version is still 2023.06-1.
