No keyboard at hand right now… already downloading the image using the installer… why is it so slow at just 100kb/sec ?
You have just disabled Kodi
Re-enable it with systemctl enable mediacenter and reboot.
The download speed will be pretty much as fast as your Internet connection.

OK thanks for all the help. I managed to rebuild the unit from USB. Everything was gone but luckily I had a backup of my skin settings. Think I’ll stop fiddling with these scripts for now 
I figured a better way is to just disable the Vero’s response to ping requests, see [HowTo] Start/Stop Kodi with your remote (headless mode) - #5 by dillthedog
